The Desolation of Melgar

Melgar once stood as a glorious tundra, so cold that it was considered uninhabitable by The Empire of Calcia. As Calcia struck across the world, they found this place of little value, until a star descended from the heavens. Landing in a massive cylinder of metal far too smooth to be natural, tall, luminous beings without faces, in clothing no mortal ever wore, stepped out onto this unwanted land, and claimed it their own. Great structures of smooth dark metal, and beings of steel and fire walked in these Star Men's service. Animals grew more aggressive, as the land was slowly drained of resources. Thousands of years later, they vanished without any sign as to why these unholy divine beings could so suddenly be nothing. The Calcians no longer have direct access to the territory, and the Askarians are too disorganized politically to take it. In recent years however, the Science and Engineering Committee of Progress have taken an interest in the location, and as they've gained political power in the senate, they have began gathering resources to launch an expedition.

Geography

The former tundra of Melgar used to be rather flat, with trees to dot the landscape and brush all along the ground. It now is populated by rocks and ash, the vegetation dried and dead. It brings to memory The Badlands, but far colder. Ash is spread over the entirety of the land.

Ecosystem

The ecosystem left behind by the Star People was littered with machines with biological components, some living through the centuries and unable to reproduce, other designed to propagate. It is unknown why the Star People damned their surrounding ecosystem like so, but the results are clear, half-machine half-animal monstrosities roam the landscape now, the previous creatures driven to extinction.

Localized Phenomena

Similar to the Badlands, the ash on the ground is sometimes whipped up by high winds, creating a massive ash cloud that thunders across the tundra.

Fauna & Flora

The flora left after the visitation of the Melgarians were ultra-hardy plants, snow cacti and especially hardy trees. The fauna left are tunnel dwellers and large monstrous beasts, those that have not been killed by the invasive species left behind by the Melgarians.

History

Melgar was a tundra inhabited by monster's of frightening power, both the cold and the fauna making the land uninhabitable. The Calcians, who had outposts in much of the known world at the time, could not penetrate into this land to settle. They instead left it alone.   In the year 263 after the Prima Centura, a light could be seen from the sky. Many feared something was amiss, that some god was enacting a punishment for their hubris and extermination of the Dragon Tyrants. The light slowed, and from the light a cylinder dropped to the world below. The beings that strode forth from the craft were tall, luminescent beings of unseen faces. Calcian scouts in the snowy region were the first to be contacted, their account is translated below.
"The Visitors stood taller than any scout present, their skin shining with light that assaulted our eyes and forced us to look away. We could not see their faces, and their voice spoke to us from within out own minds, forcing understanding into us. They came to be left alone, and left alone they would be. They sent us away with a flick of their hand, and we ran. We ran as far as our legs would allow, their starbright faces haunting our memories. I can not come to terms with what I saw, like angels standing before us but with such brutal countenance, dismissive and uncaring. We didn't tell anyone for the longest time, though they asked what had shaken us so. Eventually I told my superior, and the chain of command was notified. Beyond that is not for me to know. I fear them, those luminous beings that spoke to our minds. What brought them here? Why? Will they leave?"
These beings lived in Melgar for thousands of years, unseen and unheard from. It is only recently that they have been noticed to be missing. No sign has been seen, and only now has Askary gotten the resources to plot an expedition.
