Chal'yekhi
Requirements
Generally, girls chosen to become the next Chal'yekhi are somewhere between 13-20, but anyone from infants to old crones have historical precedence to be chosen. Having children already or being able to have children in the future is also a boon, as the Chal'yekhi makes a ritual sacrifice of one of her own children each year. In practice, the only real requirement is to have an above average understanding of the teachings of the Deep, and to be the first one to impress the Vizier or strike his fancy.
Appointment
The appointment process begins when the current Chal'yekhi is on her deathbed. The The Grand Vizier goes out into the world, looking for young crabfolk women who have been touched by the deep. When he finds the successor, he brings her back to The Black Cliff Fortress for her new life to begin.
Grounds for Removal/Dismissal
The Chal'yekhi holds her position until death, with no opportunity for it to be stripped from her.
They are in theory unable to abdicate, as well, but historically, one or two have stepped down from their position before death for one reason or another. In these cases, she is required to remain on the throne until her Vizier has selected her replacement.
