The Sheldomar Valley
The fertile Sheldomar Valley is almost completely enclosed by mountains until it reaches the Azure Sea. Two great rivers, the Sheldomar and the Javan, water these lands between the Crystalmists and the Lortmils. The climate here is warm and mild, and many olves, dwur, noniz, and hobniz live in peace alongside Suel, Oeridian, and Flan farmers and lords.
This region of the Flanaess can boast of being amogn the earliest settled by humanity. It was once dominated by an ancient giant civilization that apssed into history long before the Flan arrived almost 3,000 years ago. The Flan built their first great city in this area, somewhere on the southern slopes of the Lortmils in what would be today one of hte Ulek states. It was also the center of power for the vil Occluded Empire of Vecna.
Then came the Suel. They arrived in three waves. The first were a limited number of colonists sent by the Suel Imperium at its height to establish mining and lumbering colonies. Both were in increasingly short supply back home, and the prices on both were high enough to justify the transportation costs. The second were the dissidents, criminals, and exiles who fled to the Sheldomar prior to the last Suel-Baklunish War. The final group was the refugees from that war, leaving to avoid the destruction that would culminate in the Twin Cataclysms. These latter two groups characterized the worst elements of the Suloise (although even the colonists were not particularly pleasant), and their actions have tainted the legacy of the Suloise ever since.
For the most part, the Suel who came to the Sheldomar preferred to do as little as possible to build new homes. Wherever possible, they would conquer an existing Flan settlement, enslave the survivors, and settle down to rule their new “ancestral lands.” If that was not possible, or if they lost such a battle, they would move on in an effort to find someone less able to defend their lands than the last people. Only in the most extreme cases would they bother trying establishing new farms and plantations, carving them from the vast forests that covered the lower Sheldomar in those days. Thousands were slain, and more thousands enslaved until the establishment of Keoland and the outlawing of slavery within its borders.
The Suel did not have the Sheldomar to themselves for long. While the bulk of the Oeridians migrating into the Flanaess took a “northern” route that would see them follow the Velverdyva riover to the Nyr Dyv and beyond, several tribes found their way south of the Lortmils and into the Sheldomar Valley. Although they comprised several minor tribes, as a group theyr became known as The Keogh. In time these Oerdians would come to terms with the two most powerful Suel houses, the Rhola and Neheli, entreing into an agreement that would see the creation of the Kingdom of Keoland.
While the entire valley was at one time a part of the Kingdom of Keoland, many of the neighbouring nations like the Flan-dominated Grand Duchy of Geoff, the Earldom of Sterich, the Gran March and the freemen of The Yeomanry grew independent after disagreeing with Keoland’s past militarism. The region is threatened by humanoids, including giants, from the surrounding mountains and the more organised humanoid forces of the Pomarj.
