Greyhawk 4: Lightbringer Remembers
General Summary
From the diary of Whipperwillow Wysterwind Whompenwood
We traveled again from the bustling city to the Chateau to work on clearing out the remaining goblins that had taken up residence. Miles Lightbringer, Findere, a half-orc fellow named Dax, and I headed there to crack some skulls.
Fortunately, we saw nary a living goblin. We decided to explore some of the rooms, finding a few nice things hidden away. We did not return to the library, as Mr. Kerric well warned us of the ghost residing there. We found a ring in a secret desk drawer in a lounge, a wand in a chandelier in the dining hall, and a veranda overlooking a promising and overgrown garden.
Content with the majority of the first floor explored, we ascended the grand staircase, but were confronted by a wall of seemingly magical darkness. We deliberated as to the best way to pass through the darkness. Findere thought the best way forward might be to cut through the ceiling of the dining hall. Once up in the chandelier, he was convinced otherwise when Miles Lightbringer was reminded by Heironeous (more like erroneous) that he had one of 4 wands found that produced magical light, which barely cut through the darkness. We speculated that the other 3 might better cut through the darkness.
We explored the upper floor, finding many bedrooms throughout, most having candles. Much of the second floor was decidedly uninteresting and not dangerous, but we went slowly and carefully. When we got to the sitting room, I asked Mr Lightbringer to try lighting the candles with the wand, which worked! We found a room with a staircase to the attic, but Findere was not able to open the lock and thought we should look for a key. This led us to the master bedroom, which was extravagantly furnished, even with a full-size owlbear. It did not appear to be stuffed, but perhaps ... frozen? It didn't attack, but it was marvelously life-like. Dax went through the room like a tornado, searching for more treasures. We found an invisible scroll case, which contained a scroll of eager interest to Findere.
Happy with our exploration, we returned to Greyhawk, with good ideas of where any remaining goblins and orcs aren't and a waxing curiosity about this house.
Follow Up:
- The upper floor is mostly cleared, though we didn't further investigate the library. I wonder if the ghost is N, the man in the painting with books in the background. Perhaps knowing his name might make it easier to help him move into the afterlife.
- We're looking for a key to get into the attic, or perhaps someone clever with locks than Findere.
- We need to get into the basement and probably be ready for some combat. Dax did set up some dishware on the floor in such a way that we might see if someone stumbled over them as they were coming from the basement.
- Findere found a wand that needs to be identified and Dax found a ring that I have.
- The main and upper levels were quite quiet. We might be very close to completing our task.
