Arkerzun
The Capital of the Fields
By Suldir!
A group of merchants walk down the cobblestone streets of an opulent market. Below them, a Dwarf works metal in the heat of the forge, pounding his hammer into a piece of red-hot steel. Across the city, a Gnome clerk changes ledgers in her employer's office. An Elf noble attends a garish party in the Windkeep. These are all stories of the inhabitants of Arkerzun, the Capital of The Kingdom of Adiril.
The Capital
Arkerzun is the capital of The Kingdom of Adiril . From here, the Adirilians control vast areas across the continent and beyond. The King of Adiril lives upon the Greengrove Cliffs that make up a portion of the city in Windkeep Palace, a massive castle at the highest point. The area around this castle makes up the noble district, the Diamond District.
Demographics
57% Human, 23% Dwarven, 5% Elven, 15% other.
Government
As the Capital of the Kingdom of Adiril, the city is to be directly run by the King. However, the King is busy, and so usually the city is run by a council of trusted officials close to the King, The Kingdom of Arkerzun.
Defences
Stone walls surround the city, with an additional wall surrounding the royal district. Ballistae and some catapults adorn these walls, as well as platforms from which archers and mages can attack invading forces.
Industry & Trade
The people of Arkerzun are city-folk through and through, most of the produce and food in the city comes from outside areas (mostly Vanra's Grove). There are, however, artisans of all sorts, guildsmen, universities, and other staples of city life.
Guilds and Factions
The Autumn Watch - The Spies of the Adirilian Empire are based here, and seem to know any and all things of import that happen in the city. Is that friendly gnome you just met simply a nice passersby? Or are they gathering information? The people of Arkerzun never really know.
The Azure Guard - The guard presence in the city, Headed at the Royal Garrison, with outposts in every major district in the city.
The Thieves Guild (The Coin of Shadow) - A blanket name for the hundreds of underground operations that work collectively to keep out of the eyes of the Autumn Order. These thieves are less pickpockets and robbers (though some are!) and more embezzlement, counterfeiting, and other such illegal acts.
The Nobility - The Rulers of Adiril live in this city, and rule from here. The senate and council meet in designated areas within the Royal district. The King lives in Windkeep Palace.
History
Underground Origins
The City of Arkerzun is currently the hub of human civilization in Dramari, but it was not always this way. Arkerzun began as a Dwarven City ruled by Clan Fireforge hundreds of years before the Scism. The Dwarves were Hill Dwarves, and they made a home in the Greengrove Cliffs due to the amount of iron and other metals naturally found there. Around 400 years before the Scism, the Dwarves abandoned the city. Ancient sources contradict each other regarding why. Some ancient texts say there was a plague that wiped out most of the population of the city, others say that a rival Clan came and ousted the inhabitants, and some say that they dug too deep. Either way, at some point the Dwarves disappeared from the city. Soon after, Duergar - Gray Dwarves - settled in the ruins of the city, coming up from the Underdark and living in the Old Dwarf City. These Duergar only ate things that they could kill or grow underground, and so the topside village went abandoned.Misoren Invasion
After around 230 years, the Misorens landed in Dramari for the first time. Whatever tribes and small communities were in the Fields remained were quickly assimilated either by military force or by willing contribution. Eventually, the Misorens came to the Greengrove Cliffs and found a set of ruins, the remnants of the ancient Dwarves' farming buildings and things of that sort. Finding it suitable for a village, the Misorens established the Village of Edraal in 184 PS. Initially, the settlers thought they had stumbled upon the ruins of an aboveground Dwarf city that died out soon after its establishment. Archeologists from Misore proper studied the buildings and artifacts with excitement. That excitement only increased as, in 175 PS, a rockslide on the cliffs revealed a massive entrance to the underground city. Misoren explorers entered, only to be killed by the Duergar. The Misorens sent an army into the cliffs, nearly ousting the Duergar before a Duergar mage cast a spell that collapsed a part of the city. With the Duergar retreated back to the Underdark, Misoren archeologists began studying the city proper. They found that the city was originally built by a Clan Fireforge, that lived in the mountains nearby. They discovered the original name of the settlement, Arkerzun, and renamed their settlement as such. They also invited Clan Fireforge back to rebuild the city that they once had.A Seat for the Shols
Years pass, and so do empires. The Misoren Empire across the sea incited what would be later called the Scism, and the subsequent Sundering, which scarred the landscape of the original Misoren continent. In the few years past that time, the nobles in Arkerzun became angry. The Misoren governer crowned himself emperor, and the nobles of Arkerzun immediately rebelled. Hildemar Shol organized the rebel nobles, and the Shortsword rebellion began. In the aftermath of the war, the Kingdom of Adiril was established, with Arkerzun as its capital. The Shols became the royal family of Adiril. After a short stint of civil war, Arkerzun became the seat of the Mirillian Fields, and Windkeep Palace was constructed atop the highest cliffs in the city. Haven of Magic Hildemar Shol won his rebellion in large part due to the contribution of mages from around the Fields and beyond and was grateful enough to repeal all of the local laws that banned magic and other arcane studies. The Shols built The Tower of Arkerzun , a haven for arcane pursuits. Six towers were constructed around it, the Candles. The Candles are the towers of each of the council members and their respective fields of magic. Each tower houses several hundred mages, including that Candle's Archmage. They also have classrooms, chambers, and other facilities. Over time, other buildings and structures were built around the Tower, within the perimeter of the Candles that surround it. This is the Tebahn District of Arkerzun, named after Elak TebahnArchitecture
The city, due to its sheer size is a mix of architectural styles and buildings.
Geography
The city sits on a river, in the middle of the Mirillian Plains, partially atop the Greengrove Cliffs.
Natural Resources
The Dwarven district produces thousands of tons of heavy metals a year; iron, platinum, copper, and even more precious things like Gold or mithril. The city proper does have some forests and fields nearby, allowing for a small timber workspace.
