The general election of 1923
Stanley Baldwin, prime minister, called an election to push for "Protectionism" - a program of tariffs on imports to boost British Manufacturing. It went down to overwhelming defeat, largely (according to the reporting at the time) on the votes of newly enfranchised women, who were never going to vote for higher food prices.
The Daily News, a pro-free-trade newspaper, introduced a tune for opponents to sing to the tune of "Yes, We Have No Bananas."
No, we won't have Protection
We won't have Protection today.
'Twould rush up the prices
And squeeze us like vices
And we'd have to pay, pay, pay.
