In 2071, several factions were vying for control of territory on Mars. The UN sent a peacekeeping force in, but most were slaughtered. After the UN used heavy-handed tactics, killing several civilians, these factions united to form the Insurgency. Millions of UN troops landed on battlefields across Mars, most of them dying. The Insurgency was gaining the upper hand. In response to growing fear over the insurgency spreading to earth, the UN authorized the use of nuclear weapons. Most of Mars became an irradiated wasteland, with only a fraction of the civilian population surviving. This severely impacted the UN's relationship with the other colonies in the Sol System.
