Frostlander flute lance
The song maker and mounted weapon of choice for the Frostlanders. It is a sturdy hardwood war lance with a flute built into the lower half of the shaft that has become as synonymous with the Frostlander people as the mammoths they heard. This is why some call the 'Froslands the glens of music' as the low, clear song of the flute spear resonates through the valleys.
Manufacturing process
The flute and shaft are meticulously carved as three separate parts to ensure they will fit perfectly fit and lacquered to harden the ivory and protect it from the elements. The shaft is constructed by slotting the wood into the flute at either side and is secured by being tightly wrapped at either side with strong leather and pinned in. The lower wood of the spear is hollowed in a particular way so that the song of the flute can travel out without compromising the strength of the shaft.
Significance
The flute lance is a weapon that tells folk all they need to know of the Frostlanders. In the sparse glens of the north those who make it their home must find resilience and find in simple things the means to work with the world around them. This state of mind is embodied in the flute lance. This single tool lifts the soul and defends the body, it guides the herd and brings down prey, it soothes the horse and knocks the foe of his own, it sounds the alarm and strikes at the predator, it fills the tent with song and keeps the intruder at bay. Along with the mammoth and the bow, the lance is an integral aspect of the Frostlander way of life.
