Mana

Mana is a byproduct of a creature's Lifeforce, as the soul continually produces energy that the body cannot fully contain. For Elder Races, such as the Lasil, it emanates from an individual like an aura and its connection to a person is loose. Those attuned to their Mana can shift and extend it like a limb in tendrils or ball it up and concentrate that energy into magical effects. The Child Races, like the Nusaura do not retain Mana as the Elder Races do. It dissipates as it leaves the body. Mana is "replenished" as excess energy spills out of the creature's Lifeforce and is retained by the body. If the Lifeforce is drained, no Mana will be produced, as all of the energy the soul produces will renew the Lifeforce first. While Lifeforce is slow to return, Mana is produced relatively quickly since it is a much less concentrated energy. Mana is usually invisible to the naked eye, but in sufficient concentrations, or when being actively manipulated, it produces a faint glow.

Only the Elder Races are able to retain their Mana in any usable form. For Child Races and other creatures, the energy simply dissipates out of the physical world. Mages of the Elder Races can use Mana as an extension of themselves, either as a sensory tool or as a manipulative force.
