Wetstone Scales
"If you are not following the desert roads, make sure to carry wetstone. It will keep you safe even from the worst of the heat."
- Lecture from Battle Commanders
A rare material harvested from elemental sea serpents. These giant scales are made of stone but retain an essence of living water even after the death of the serpent they came from. The stone is incredibly dense, and the living water provides a cooling aura and gentle scent of ocean waves, which never seems to fade.
Harvesting and Supply
Beyond the very unlikely occasion where a serpent is killed, the only source of wetstone scales is exports from Sanctuary Cove; a hidden village somewhere in the Bitter Shoals. It is unknown how the village is able to collect these scales. Their exports are carefully controlled and staggered, to prevent routes to and from the village being discovered. While the village could become abundantly wealthy by providing a steady flow of these scales, they seem to prioritize secrecy over potential wealth.
Uses
Smaller scales are more abundant, but still expensive. Even pieces of broken scales can be incredibly useful. Beyond the protective nature of the scales, the living water essence affords many uses. One of the most common uses is for travelers crossing the Scoured Sands. Travelers who choice not to use the one maintained road through the vast desert do so at great risk from the elements. The few who try usually bring wetstone scale with them to provide moisture and take advantage of its cooling aura.
Even in the desert these scales do not dry out unless extremely damaged. It is veery easy to tell when a scale has been damaged to this extent, as it begins to dry out and smell like rotting fish. Any traveler in the desert when this happens is in a dire situation. Beyond the routine risks of the desert, the smell will quickly draw in predators. The only way forward is to abandon the scale and hope for the best.
Pieces of scales are commonly used in agriculture. Burying the fragments in the soil, particularly in arid lands, provides a small but endless source of moisture to sustain growth. While more common in farmlands this tactic can also be seen in some home garden plots within Chronwhorl.
