Roll for Character Creation

Creating a character in Oabos involves designing the soul map and then building out the details of who your character is from there. One way to fill in the soul map is by rolling for each element. Rather than rolling for the elements in a set order, you’ll flip a coin twice for the soul core and roll three times to fill the rings. You can then decide which element belongs in each ring. Below is an overview of the soul map and how the elements work in each ring.

Soul Selection

Flip two coins:
    • Two Heads: You are a true human and have a radiant soul core. You can trace your family history back to the first humans to arrive on Oabos, without ever being tainted by the raw elements of the world.
    • Heads then Tails: You are a myth-touched human. You still have a radiant soul core, but non-human elements are present in your soul map. You are a child of both worlds.
    • Tails then Either: You are an elementine. A natural denizen of Oabos, with a soul core of oas., you are a being of the raw elements taken form.

Assignment & Placement

Once the three elements have been determined, you will decide where to place them in a soul map. There are three rings mind/body/spirit, and each ring can hold one element.
The mind ring determines the general thought patterns and personality of the character. Some examples would be a ground-mind is very set in their ways and hard to change. They are also very true to themselves and not easily swayed by others. A radiance-mind can be a very religious person, with many of their tendencies naturally drawn to the holy light of humans and the goddess behind it. Synsri and flowing minds tend to be very flexible and able to consider different perspectives easily, but a flowing-mind will usually be steadier and more structured, while a synsri mind is likely very curious and prone to fancy. The mind ring does not determine exact details of how someone thinks or behaves, but is a foundation for the general personality and natural tendencies.
The body ring relates to the character's physical form. Flesh is a literal body in the way we know it. Other elements in the body ring can mean a body made entirely of that element or heavily affected by it. Elementine tend to have literal bodies of the elements while myth-touched humans may have effects on their natural bodies from the element in their soul ring. A flesh element is not required in the body ring to have a human body. A character born naturally from two humans will have a fleshy body regardless. Impacts from the body ring could be a supernatural toughness, or living stone within their skin, for a ground-body, or extreme heat resistance for a burning-body.
The spirit ring develops as a character grows and ages, eventually manifesting as an ability of some kind related to the element.

Element positions on each ring in relation to the other rings are also important. If the mind and body elements are very close to each other, the character will be firmly connected in body and mind. They have very strong self-awareness but may have trouble seeing outside themselves and thinking of others naturally. The opposite extreme is if the elements are directly opposite each other on the soul map, as far apart as possible. These characters likely have issues with self-identity and easily disassociate. Because there is no clear bond between mind and body, these characters may struggle with a sense of self or lose themselves in caring for others.
Body and spirit alignment are also very important. This alignment impacts how their ability manifests. A closely aligned, or touching, body and spirit will have an ability which only affects themselves. A directly opposed body and spirit results in an ability which can only affect others. These two extremes have the most power behind them but are limited by their scope of effect. A more balanced placement loses potency in exchange for more range options.
Like the mind, the body and spirit rings are not rigid definitions of what a character is or can do. It serves as a natural framework for what their soul is made of. A burning element is truly the essence of temperature (rather than fire) and could be extreme cold instead of extreme heat. Environment also plays a large role in the finer details of how elements actually manifest. Some combinations may not work, while others may have unexpected interactions.

I am currently finishing up articles on each element to help break down the details of what they are and how they typically show up in different rings.

Once the soul map is filled in, the rest is up to you. The map provides natural tendencies and the basis for form and abilities. Now that you have the foundation, who are you?
