During the Age of Artifice, an event occurred called the Wolf's Ball, hosted by the newly-coronated Pirate Lord. This Pirate Lord was a famous smuggler with mysteriously close connections to high society - at least, that was the rumor. Not just a smuggler, but an inventor as well. He created a detection device with telepathic properties that would tell him where a stash of cargo was located or which ships to pursue and rob. This made him formidable in battle, not to mention obscenely rich. As his reputation and wealth grew, so too did his somewhat nervous and paranoid nature.

Seafarers from all across Vanea gathered for the Wolf's Ball, as did the Captain's daughter. A young, attractive, up-and-coming seafarer was also in attendance - a captain in his own right, though of a much smaller and somewhat enigmatic crew. He was once an assistant to a famous artificer who was mysteriously murdered. Blamed for the murder of his mentor, he fled, along with the only thing he saved as he ran - an invention of his own make - the world's first handheld cannon. Roughly translated, its name in Elvish means "never should have been." Covered in glyphs and runes, the device was a beautiful and deadly mechanical, magical marvel.

The Pirate King's daughter met the young captain and the two fell into a torrid love affair. Something happened to where the Pirate King ordered the execution of the young captain, and the daughter inherits the runeguns. These are the first firearms in Vanea.
