Riran celestial magic

Governed by the movements of the moons, planets, stars, and other heavenly bodies, celestial magic is a form of witchcraft parcticed mainly in the western regions of North Erwa, and most closely associated with the Kingdom of Riras.

An intricate magical system interlinked with an elaborate cosmology, celestial magic is difficult for outsiders to get to grips with.

Part of this difficulty is the multitude of waxing and waning influences; not merely the various lunar phases, as is common in many other systems, but the dominant constellations, comets, planetary positions within sectors of the sky ("houses"). Uncommonly for celestial magic, the Northern Erwan school also incorporates solar activity into its structure, with the sun being the primary deity to which all other celestial deities contribute their strength.

Dividing the year into three seasons governed by the moons, with each season further divided into six sub-seasons governed by the planets, and modified by the major constellations. Each sub-season and lunar phase is associated with a different type of magic, which increases in efficiency as its ruling deity comes to prominence (though allied and affiliated gods also increase the magic's potency) and waning as contrary and conflicting deities rise.

Due to the complex interplay of celestial forces, it is rare that any school of magic is completely disempowered, but it does occur. A total eclipse is the most common reason, but comets (which represent the forces of decay and entropy) are detrimental to all schools, with all but the strongest being close to useless during the period of closest transit.

One of the uncommon features of celestial magic is that the the six planet-deities and their domains are related to types of magic rather than domains. The enables a witch to work across domains, picking the technique according to the confluence of influences.
