Superluminal Travel

Long contemplated by theoretical physicists, superluminal travel was finally made possible in 1055 after a breakthrough in energy generation. With the abundance of portable power provided by new cold fusion reactors, scientists were finally able to equip space vessels with singularity generators. On a planets surface, singularity generators are fed by hundreds of sustained reactors, and used to warp and manipulate the local fabric. Aboard a space vessel however, a singularity generator can be used to move the fabric containing the vessel. This allows for not only incredible manueverability, but travel unimpeded by the restrictions of relativity or other forces.   Size constraints prevent this technology from being practical on smaller craft, as even today the smallest superluminal vessel stretches some three kilometers to accommodate the reactor and generator. Because of this, vessels are usually constructed with holding docks for smaller craft during superluminal voyages. As standard relativistic laws no longer apply to superluminal travellers, time dilation is not a concern and "velocity" is limited only by the amount of power supplied to the generator. In terms of efficiency, volume of fabric moved is the deciding factor while mass has no effhttps://www.worldanvil.com/world/technology/1ba7cc46-d4f0-4788-a94d-717c421778e3/edit#template-dataect.   With vessels outpacing light, a true interstellar civilization was only a matter of time. The home worlds entered a colonial race. With seemingly unlimited planets now in reach, vessels poured from the home system in all directions. By NE-XXXX programs for over 190 planets were well underway, as each of the Home Worlds competed for prime real estate.   While superluminal travel opened the stellar gateway for humanity, it wasn't long before military applications for the technology were devised. As anything within range of a singularity generator can be subject to its influence, a superluminal vessel would be able to simply rend any nearby enemies apart in what is now commonly known as Rending. With the advent of offensive Rending, naval combat has seen a noticeable increase in distance as a Coordinator cannot afford the risk of instant destruction.   The most destructive application of superluminal technology came relatively recently in the form of Warp-Bombs. As superweapons, Warp-Bombs are the ultimate policy enforcer of mutually assured destruction. In simple terms, the "bombs" aren't actually bombs at all, but small, heavy vessels with barebones superluminal capability. The vessels are extremely costly simply for their engines, but an ultra-dense bomb travelling at even subluminal speeds would be more than capable of causing an extinction event on any inhabited world. At superluminal speeds, the effect is intensified beyond measure, usually causing a total cracking and vapourizing of the target world.

Utility

Used for quick interstellar travel, with vessels generally being capable of travelling hundreds of light years in the span of weeks. Requires use of advanced Machine Intelligence to properly manipulate local fabric. Discovered to help humans expand beyond their home system. Although unimpeded by gravity, usage of Superluminal travel inside of atmospheres is avoided whenever possible. A vessel traversing a dense atmosphere at superluminal speeds would cause nuclear devastation to the surrounding areas, while also straining its defensive energy reserves to the brink.

Manufacturing

Engines are extremely complex and difficult to make, only made on select planets by either governing agencies or their contracted companies.

Social Impact

Allowed human civilization to spread beyond the Novus System
Access & Availability
Restricted to large vessels because of minimum engine size, smaller ships must dock with with them for interstellar travel. Superluminal vessel ownership restricted to ultra wealthy and departments of government.
Complexity
A fairly advanced technology heralding a civilizations interstellar age. Requires immense amounts of energy to use, no less than a powerful Cold-Fusion reactor
Discovery
The physics for Superluminal travel were pieced together in the early 11th century NE, and the first Superluminal vessel was constructed in 1055.
