Jurandar
The first and only sapient species discovered by humanity
Basic Information
Anatomy
Carbon based Psuedo-Avian tetrapods. Jurandar walk upright on hind legs, and have two short arms with three digits on each. A short but broad tail helps counterbalance their forward hunching bodies. Their large heads sport two forward facing eyes mounted on a toothed beak, with a sound receptor in between at the beak's base.
Mature Jurandar can grow to a height of over 3 meters, but only weight around 120kg.
Genetics and Reproduction
Reproducing asexually, upon maturity a Jurandar will birth a single offspring, encased in an egg-analogue for over a year. If the offspring is destroyed, the Jurandar will soon birth another. If the offspring successfully hatches, the Jurandar will continue the cycle. Up to 6 cycles may be attempted, after which the Jurandar will be unable to birth further children.
Growth Rate & Stages
Spending over a year developing in an egg-analogue, Jurandar hatch with intelligence equivalent to a two year old human. The following decade is spent growing and learning, and they are considered adults at 10 years of age, at which point reproduction cycles generally begin. On average a Jurandar can expect to live for around 60 years, although rare cases of 70 and 80 year old members of the species exist.
Ecology and Habitats
Evolving in the arid drylands of Jurik, Jurandar began as opportunistic scavengers, often waiting to take remains left by larger predators. With the advent of civilization however, the species has managed to eradicate their predators and spread across the planet, adapting to different climates not unlike humans.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Historically omnivorous, Jurandar have a wide diet that has grown with their civilization. Their caloric requirements are nearly twice that of an average human.
Biological Cycle
When the reproductive stage of a Jurandar is finished, they begin to lose colour on their back, as a white streak expands with age.
Behaviour
Intelligent and cooperative, Jurandar are naturally inclined towards the betterment of the species. As such, differing factions come to compromise more often than conflict.
