Dream Fae

“The world is a dream, and we are its cartographers. But every map has its blank spaces, its monsters, and its places where the dream tries to swallow you whole."
— Lunari Whisperveil, Dream Fae Oracle

Dream Fae: An Overview

The Dream Fae of Nelamdra are enigmatic, psionically gifted beings whose lives unfold where the veil between the waking world and the cosmic dreamscape is thinnest. Shaped by their connection to Lunaris, the ancient moonstone dragon, they see reality through the lens of dreams and leyline harmonics. Other peoples often regard them with a mix of wonder and caution, respecting their wisdom but wary of their inscrutable motives and the strange events that follow in their wake. Dream Fae value introspection, artistic expression, and the pursuit of hidden truths—though their constant communion with the dream-echoes means they often live on the edge of revelation and madness. Most dwell in Nelamdra’s luminous crystal caverns, harmonizing with the subterranean energies and defending their realms from those who would exploit their dream-gifted talents.

Physical Description

Dream Fae are small, lithe, and ethereal in appearance, ranging from 3 to 4 feet tall and weighing 35 to 50 pounds. Their skin shimmers faintly in moonlight, with tones of pearlescent white, lavender, or pale blue. Their eyes glow with inner light—sometimes silver, sometimes opalescent—hinting at their psionic gifts. Hair is typically silver, lavender, or moonlit blue, worn long and flowing or intricately braided to reflect phases of the moon or memorable dreams. Culturally, they favor gossamer robes, crystalline jewelry, and illusion-shrouded adornments—garments that shift hue or pattern depending on the wearer’s dreams or emotional state. Their fashion is practical for life in crystal caverns yet always artistic, reflecting their ties to both beauty and the otherworldly.

Lifespan and outlook: Centuries of vision, moments of clarity

Dream Fae mature at a similar rate to humans but live somewhat longer, often reaching 400 years. With age, they accumulate dream-memories and past-life echoes, which grant wisdom but sometimes lead to mental strain or melancholic introspection. Young Dream Fae tend to be curious and experimental, older Dream Fae contemplative and serene—though the constant pressure of dream-echoes can make elders withdrawn or eccentric. Their longevity shapes their relationships; they see mortal struggles in the context of grand cycles and rarely rush important decisions. Some elders become revered as “memory-keepers,” while others are haunted by past mistakes they’ve glimpsed in dreams.

Families and Societies: Dream-councils and crystal kinship

Dream Fae societies are intimate and collective, structured around enclaves governed by Dream-Councils. Family bonds are strong, but kinship extends to those who share vision-quests or dream-revelations, not just blood. Social gatherings often involve shared dream-trances, communal art, and collaborative defense of leyline sites. Children are raised communally and are encouraged to explore their dream-gifts early. Outside their realms, Dream Fae may serve as envoys, psionic advisors, or guardians of ancient secrets. Some travel the world to study other cultures’ dreams, protect Nelamdra’s interests, or recover lost dream-lore.

Naming Traditions

Names are chosen based on dream-visions, psychic insights, or significant life events. It’s common to adopt new names after major revelations or accomplishments. Clan and enclave names reflect crystal formations, celestial events, or the mood of a shared dream. Names are melodic, whimsical, and often gender-neutral.

Reasons to go Adventuring: Vision-haunted and fate-bound dreamwalkers

Dream Fae adventurers may be driven by haunting dream-visions, a quest for lost psionic lore, protection of a vital leyline, or the pursuit of a prophecy seen only in sleep. Many travel to understand the world’s dreams, unravel the plots of Azhra cults, or simply to find meaning in a reality that is always on the verge of dissolving into the unreal.

Creating a Dream Fae Player Character

Your Dream Fae character moves through the waking world shaped by dream-walking, whimsy, and ever-shifting magic.

Ability Score Increase.
Your Intelligence score increases by 2, and your Wisdom score increases by 1. Alternatively, you may increase three scores by 1.
Age.
Dream Fae mature at a similar rate to humans but live slightly longer, often reaching 400 years. Their minds age differently, however—many experience lucid dreams of past lives or ancestral memories by their second century, sometimes leading to mental strain.
Size.
Dream Fae are lithe and ethereal in appearance, with luminous eyes, silver or lavender hair, and skin that sometimes shimmers faintly in moonlight. Your average height ranges from 3 feet to 4 feet tall. Your weight typically falls between 35 and 50 pounds. Your size is Small.
Speed.
Your base walking speed is 25 feet.
Dreamborn Resilience.
You have resistance to psychic damage. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed or put to sleep.
Astral Sight.
You possess a unique vision that pierces the veil of reality. As a bonus action, you can activate or suppress your Astral Sight. While active, you can see into the Ethereal Plane out to 30 feet, and you can perceive the faint psychic residue left by strong emotions or recent memories (DM's discretion, e.g., a flash of color for strong joy, a shiver for fear). This vision is suppressed in an antimagic field. This also allows you to detect ethereal creatures for purposes of attacks or other interactions.
Dream Echo.
You can communicate telepathically with any creature you can see within 30 feet that understands a language. This telepathy is often tinged with faint, dreamlike whispers or fleeting images. When you use this telepathy to probe the thoughts of a hostile creature, you must succeed on a DC 12 Wisdom saving throw or take 1d4 psychic damage as their mental defenses backlash. Additionally, once per long rest, you can use your telepathy to "borrow" a single language from a creature you are telepathically communicating with for 1 hour, representing a temporary shared dream-logic.
Lucid Casting.
You know the minor illusion cantrip. At 3rd level, you can cast detect thoughts once per long rest. Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for these spells. If you cast detect thoughts using this trait, you must succeed on a DC 12 Wisdom saving throw or gain 1 level of exhaustion as the mental strain briefly overwhelms you. This exhaustion can only be removed by finishing a long rest and succeeding on a DC 10 Wisdom saving throw during that rest, or by a greater restoration spell.
Dreamwalk.
Your mind can briefly step into the cosmic dreamscape to acquire knowledge, but the journey is not without peril. When you finish a long rest, you can choose to enter a Dreamwalk Trance for 1 hour. During this trance, your mind journeys through the cosmic dreamscape. When you finish the trance, you can gain proficiency in one Intelligence or Wisdom skill of your choice that you are not already proficient in. This proficiency lasts until you finish your next long rest. However, you must succeed on a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw or suffer one of the effects from the Dreamscape Strain Table (d4). You can use this feature only once per long rest.
  • Dreamscape Strain Table (d4)
  • 1: Psychic Fog. You have disadvantage on all Intelligence and Wisdom (Perception) checks until your next long rest.
  • 2: Reality Flicker. You are confused (as per the confusion spell) for 1d4 rounds.
  • 3: Echoing Nightmare. You take 2d6 psychic damage.
  • 4: Planar Pull. You are teleported 1d10 feet in a random direction.
Languages.
You can speak, read, and write Common, Gnomish, and Sylvan. The Dream Fae language sounds fluid and melodic, drifting between gentle, lyrical tones and bursts of unpredictable cadence, often echoing the shifting moods of dreams themselves. Their literature is surreal and nonlinear, weaving poetry, riddles, and vivid imagery into tales that blur the boundaries between memory, fantasy, and prophecy.
