Ceres
The almighty shield of the EMC
Ceres' only claim to fame before the space industry was being the largest body within the asteroid belt. Early EMC expansion arrived at the belt and repurposed Ceres into mobile mining platform designed to mine asteroids. However less than a hundred years after the station was put into service it was attacked by an unknown entity. Stripped and left derelict, its occupation changed hands for centuries, during a violent era of merc expansion within the belt. Some attribute the initial destruction of Ceres to Nabrok; a merc pirate who used Ceres infrastructure to construct a massive chassis, for the purpose of continued plundering.
After observing the apparent loss of Merc influence within the belt, Ceres was finally reclaimed by the EMC. Before the asteroid belt was mined clean, the EMC would refit Ceres as a mobile combat platform, the largest solaris would see until the construction of The Ring.
Ceres had been intended to take part in quashing the Synth Revolt; however the platform had not even arrived at mars by the time the rebels produced the great demonstration and ended the war. For a time Ceres was again left floating idle, considered obsolete owing to its inability to accelerate and maneuver in tactically viable time frames. That changed when the EMC recovered the technology for quantum fusion from Jupiter Faction. With the QFE, Ceres would cross from alliance space and into Jupiter's orbit path at the close of the Reclamation War in just two weeks.
The arrival of Ceres signalled a turn for the war in favour of the EMC, who had struggled against the JF Rooks and their tactical deployment of mobile skirmishers. The skirmishers greatest tactic was their never before seen maneuvering speeds, owing to modified form of martian meditation within soma. At the time, Ceres operated a massive ion cannon, a munition now lawfully banned by alliance space. By the time JF was able to disable this cannon, their Rooks were shattered, and the way to EMC victory was finally visible.
Since its glory days, Ceres has seen massive reengineering. The plasma cannon has been removed in place of a massive physical shield; as the JF war showed that Ceres' greatest strength was not its firepower, but its fortitude.
