Arkannas Ridge
The End of the World
Sometimes known as ‘The End of the World,’ the city-state of Arkannas Ridge is the last outcropping of civilization that people encounter before entering the Northern Wilds. Situated at the western edge of the Aralbad Mountain Range, the small town of Arkannas Ridge was originally a supply outpost for trappers and explorers venturing into the mountains. It was established by explorers who either couldn’t or wouldn’t venture further into the Northern Wilds.
Demographics
Due to the harsh weather patterns in the area, determined humans make up the majority of the population, with hearty dwarves being a close second. Uniquely, Arkannas Ridge sees a significant population of half-orcs, and boasts the largest in the Commonwealth. While other cities tend to see them as dangerous outcasts, the people of Arkannas Ridge are proud of their half-orc brethren, and hold them in high regard as hearty and helpful citizens.
Industry & Trade
Most of the economy of Arkannas Ridge is based around trade, as well as supplying those that wish to explore the Northern Wilds. Trapping and hunting support the economy as well, as do goat farming and logging.
Geography
The cliff-side town sits within the Aralbad Mountains, roughly 100-200 feet up from the surface of the ocean. A sheltered cavern at the base of the cliff serves as a small trading dock, and a roughly-hewn staircase is carved directly into the cliff face. Great mechanical cranes at the top of the cliff serve to haul goods up and down the cliff side, as well as wealthier travelers who don’t wish to climb the steps. Above the cavern, the city’s buildings (built mostly from stone taken from the mountains) sit close together for better shelter. Above the city center, built into the mountainside, is the manor of the Lord of Arkannas Ridge, as well as many of the larger houses and workshops. Several smaller paths radiate out from the town and into the wilderness.
Rough weather patterns are the hallmark of this region; bitter cold, snow and high winds mark the winters, and rain and rough seas are normal in summer. The wild weather makes growing crops difficult, though some hearty plants do manage to grow, mostly root vegetables and stone fruits.
