Veil Users

“I need a mage,” Elandra said.
“Then it’s me,” Akanei said.
“I don’t know,” Elandra said.
“You need a healer specifically?”
“No, but I need someone with very fine control.”
“I’ve scored a forty on the Silaster Test,” Akanei said. “I can put a blaizon ball back into the muzzle at speed from three hundred paces. I’m your mage.”
Elandra nodded. “Okay. I guess I can’t ask for better than that.”

There are those in Nov Matar, of every race and kind among The Kindred Peoples that are born with the capacity to connect to the Veil. In so doing they can manipulate the Energies which is what we call magic. In general these individuals are called magi (singular: mage or magess) though in many parts they have many names. Among the Aanqor they are called kathadamin, in Calis, filothanas. Every language has a different name for them, so we will stick to mage for now.   Many magi begin very weak in magical power and clumsy, and must learn to heighten their strength as they learn the skill to use it. Those who are born particularly powerful, however, can exhibit that power in times of great stress or emotion and need to learn to temper their abilities. Either way, all but the weakest magi are usually found, either by a local mage or a travelling scholar, and are taught ways to build their power and skill. Sometimes this training is one on one, master and apprentice, and at other times, such as for those magi born near a Pillar or near Arthein, in large academies of magecraft.
