Notwarr

"[...] and since I was a young man, barely able to lift a sword I knew nothing, but war, strife and conflict. For the first time in our history, there could be peace. And IT COULD BE US, that brings the ages of bloodshed to an end, yet you persist [...] nobody wants another war, but you are forcing my hand. So be it. [...]"

From the frozen Fringelands far to the north, across the lands of the great realms, to the Deadland, the scorching desert to the south, and even beyond lies the land of Notwarr, home of conflict, war, betrayal as well as beauty, love, friendship and family. A land dominated by warring kingdoms and empires, Notwarr is a familiar setting for any fantasy enthusiast. Which is probably everyone on this site :D
I'm planning several novels for this world which will take place over centuries. As such the world, much like ours, will undergo many changes overtime. For now, allow me to tell you about the First Age of Notwarr, also-known-as the Simple Age.
The First Age
People lived much like their ancestors before them, life changed little in Notwarr. That lasted until the Arrival, end of the First Age. When magic came into the world, it destroyed most of that existed before it, leaving mankind wounded and reeling in a world they no longer understood. Hence the name of the age before Arrival, the Simple Age.

The dominant powers of Notwarr in the Simple Age are Farum and Shurrah. Farum is a large kingdom to the east on the Mainland. The people of Farrum are the most advanced in scientific and artisric ways. Shurrah is a somewhat smaller theocratic state to the south. Shurrah, while considered lesser, than Farum, is slowly growing to be the equal of Farum due to their efforts in terraforming the Deadland, which gives them lands with all the resources they come with.
Other than the two largest, there are smaller realms as well. The golden valley to the northwest and of course, the first kingdom to be founded beyond the Deadland, Hallia, the focus of my novels:)
The rest of the people, who are living outside the law, formed tribes and occupy the least hospitable places of the world. Such tribes can be found to the frozen north as well as beyond the Deadland and Hallia. |
Civilization on Notwarr started with the founding of Farum. The founding tribes united in order to fend off attackers that were too strong for them to defeat alone. As such the kingdom was never fully united, but it grew a lot faster single tribes alone could and this lead to them being the dominant power.
In time however, a single tribe, devoted to their gods of power and strife, fought and enslaved their way through the others and rose to a power similar to Farum. This tribe, the Shurrah, settled down on the edge of the Deadland, unable to move further up north.
For centuries these powers existed in a stalemate and ruled the land. Surrounded by the desert to the south and the seas on all other sides. Unable to cross the desert or sail the seas, the poeple settled in with the existing power structure and not much has changed over the years.
Shurrah was slowly terraforming the desert and after many decades of work, the first settlers managed to cross it, founding Hallia, the first southern kingdom. It looked like there is more land to the south then originally thought and there was hope for a new power to be born, independent from the rigid caste system of Farum and the religious fanaticism of Shurrah.
Then the Arrival happened. |
Notwarr is one massive continent. The northern lands are cold and rigid, it gets warmer the further south one goes. At around the 2/3 point of the continent lengthwise from the south lies the Deadland, a desert thought to be uncrossable. Beyond that lie lands unknown. |
