Church of Caelumn/Caerwyn
The Church of Caelumn (Caerwyn) is the organized religion established around the worship of the god Caelumn, also named Caerwyn in parts of the world.
Although the worship of Caelumn has been an established religion since the beginning of recorded history, predominantly in Kalisandria and the Soramyre woods, the church's influence has began to spread to the other realms. This is a benefit of the church being the faith of several prominent leaders in the Bastion Imperium.
Mythology & Lore
According to his followers, Caelumn is one of the several primordial beings that were born at the beginning of time. However, unlike the other primordial beings, Caelumn was not content with the emptiness of the abyss. To cure his boredom, Caelumn made the world in the forgotten center of the abyss. He populated this world with the humanoids that eventually evolved into the human races, the elder races (elves), the little races (halflings and gnomes), and the stout race (Dwarves) and the various beasts that make up the world native fauna. Some preachers of the church have, controversially, expanded the decedents of these humanoids to include dragonborns, goblins, and orcs in order to promote more racial unity.
While the majority of primordial did not care about Caelumn's world, several took notice of his world. Some of the primorials asked permission to join his project, these primordials are referred to as angels. Of these angels, several betrayed Caelumn's generosity and started declaring themselves gods. The beings are the pagan elder gods*. Caelumn was able to defeat these pagan gods but now asks his worshippers to continue to fight their residual influence in their every day lives.
The biggest threat, however, are those primordial beings that feel that this act of creation was an afront to the abyss itself. These beings and the part of the abyss they inhabit are called the Evil Abyss. They are said to actively sneak monstrosities past Caelumn's watch and reek havoc in the world. Historically, especially during the Draconic Invasion, these monstrosities are said to be the ancestors to the race of dragonborn.
*This is belief was added to the church's teaching relatively recently to try to incorporate more followers of the old faith into the church. It contradicts the worshipers of the elder gods since some of the elder gods are said to be as old as time itself.
Ethics
The Church of Caelumn is known for being strict, severe, and somewhat repressive towards anything they deem contradictory to Caelumn.
These include, but are not limited to:
- Promiscuity - engaging in premarital sex, prostitutions, dressing in a way unbecoming of one's dignity, etc.
- Paganism - worship of the elder gods
- heathanism - worship of the evil abyss
- absenteeism - neglecting one's biweekly active worship of Caelumn
- renunciation - renouncing the divinity of Caelumn
Worship
All follower of the Church are required to attend bi-weekly worship assemblies. These 2 hour long ceremonies can take place any day of the week, but usually take place on Haputtag and Bauchtag. If unable to attend, a worshipper must "make amends" by doing something of grave importance on behalf of Caelumn. Those most unable to attend their bi-weekly worship are soldiers and adventurers who will make amends by dedicating a combat victory to Caelumn.
Other forms of worship are short daily prayers to Caelumn or wearing his symbols, a rising sun.
The wire version of the rising sun. This is the more commonly seen version of Caelumn's Sun since it requires less artistical skill.
Priesthood
The Church is lead by the Council of Speakers and the Grand Speaker who are said to speak directly with Caelumn.
Priests often either were humble robes to denote the vows of poverty that some priestly orders take. Others dress in more noble looking robes with a rising sun.
The Church's military wing comprises itself of clerics and paladins, while not technically priest, they do have permission from the Church to perform the bi-weekly ceremonies of worship if no priest is available. The Church paladins and clerics act as guards to the clergy and are also allowed to mete out the authority of the church in places where it holds sway.
The most notorious order of paladins are known as the Inquisitors, they are rumored to be vile torturers who forcefully convert non-believers and punish those truant worshippers of Caelumn. The Inquisitors report directly to the Grand Speaker and have no further clergical oversight.
Political Influence & Intrigue
The Church's main influence comes from the fact that several prominent Imperial leaders are worshippers of Caelumn. These include several of Soramyre's ruling assembly, the royals of Kalisandria, and the Emperor himself.
Although Kalisandria claims to be a religiously free realm, the Church is given a position of great influence and favor amongst Kalisandrian society as a whole.
