Caution is given when reading ahead, make sure to take care of yourself at all times reading this article. The darkness of the cloud that the strange creature that was my mother feels heavy following behind me. I can feel her in my mind, I've tried all I can to get rid of the presence of her. Not the memory, I can't let go of the memory of her, not yet. Why can't she move on and leave me alone to miss her passing, not remember her as she is now.
Veilumbra is a special type of undead that is created when someone is so sorely missed that their spirit is bound to the mortal plane. This can be especially prominent in the deaths of direct parents, siblings, spouses, and children.
Description
A veilumbra has two primary forms. When not possessing a creature, a Veilumbra resembles the figure as they were in life, with a transparency that could not be acquired any other way than being dead. Some of the Veilumbra resemble a dark shadow, whilst others seem to have a faint blue tone to their form. Regardless, all of them seem to have bright blue eyes that almost rememble the color of tears in their eyes. While they are intangable, when a Veilumbra passes through an object, it seems to be left with a faint red aura.
When possessing someone, the Veilumbra takes the form of a dark grey cloud that seems to follow the creature they have possessed. The cloud occassionally has whisps of glowing red particles that seem to resemble the emotional state of the Veilumbra. When angry or provoked in any manner, the Veilumbra's blue eyes take over the possessed creature and it seems to be filled with an immense rage that empowers their natural abilities to a deadly capability.
History
Not much has been studied about the Veilumbra due to their seemingly random nature and the fact they require such powerful mourning to exist. The first known Veilumbra was the form of an Orc mother who seemed to appear a week after her sudden death at the hands of a priest of Zeradoth. Maldera was killed in 670 AR, and remained attatched to her husband, son, and daughter for the next 3 years, moving from one person to another as a possessor until they seemingly let go of their grief and sent her on to an afterlife.
In 749 AR, a powerful arcanist known as Heleth von Sayeen lost her daughter, Rynea, after a short illness that quickly ravaged her body, leaving her unable to fight it. When she passed, Heleth used a mote of powerful magic to tie Rynea to her form. In doing so, she created a Veilumbra that would possess her, giving Heleth a new set of life, but blocking access to her powerful magic. By 752 AR, Heleth's estate in Grantour was abandoned, and the body of Heleth was taken by Rynea to act as a vessel for her growing abilities. This shows that a Veilumbra, if in charge of possession for long enough, can infest into a body and use it as a new body for the spirit.
