The Vale War

Born into nobility, many would not expect much of Raynar Ossalimar, especially with their house ousted from Bornassi. But they would go on to make a name for not only themselves and their house, but for a whole continent.
— Quote from "The History of the Ossalimarian Empire"

The Vale War was the conflict in which a group of strong rebellious forces clashed with the Bornassi Kingdom. The rebellion defeated the Kingdom and its tyrannical leader Malithan Bornate, leading to the construction of the Ossalimarian Empire under the rebellion leader Raynar Ossalimar.

Background

Ossalimar was considered a desecrated and destroyed continent in the wake of The Shatter, many of the nations and people of the continent as it originally stood had been killed and destroyed in the divine war. By 225 AR, many different groups had started to reclaim parts of the continent, including a group far to the east that had started to develop an understanding of the the different scars between the Mortal Realm and Inner Foci.   By 340 AR, a figure known as Malithan Bornate had begun to gather many people in Korrana, the southern expanse, under his rule. For most, he seemed a fair and just ruler when he began, but he became tyrannical and aggressively took over the groups in the Marreach and Daunka Shore, pulling them into his influence. The Bornassi Kingdom was founded in 754 AR to ensure the Bornate rule, which lasted beyond the years of most normal humans. Many noble families were displaced to both Heimter and Kyradon, seeking to gather some remnants of their power.   In 385 AR, Malithan is claimed to have made a deal with one of The Deceiver Gods to gain a mote of power to control the more riled subjects and keep the nobility that remained under his control. This sparked several of the nobility that remained free from his control to gather forces outside of the continent to come depose the Kingdom and create a nation with more freedoms than they are assigned now.

Known Events

While no one incident caused the onset of The Vale War, the landing of the Golden Rebellion in the Carenvale Fields was the first major event at 399 AR. While Bornassi forces put up a fight, the population of Zerantis joined the rebellion, tired of the oppression, leading to a swift defeat and conquest of Zerantis. Within the month, the forces of the Golden Rebellion were able to claim much of the Carenvale Fields, giving the rebellion supplies and resources they needed.   There was an intense conflict over Grendial Heights between the forces of the Golden Rebellion and Bornassi Kingdom. Fort Drotaegan was reinforced with many of the strongest Bornassi soldiers, seemingly enhanced with some divine grace unlike anything that the Golden Rebellion had faced before. Many of the soldiers cut down during the fight were brought back as undead and able to push back against the strong militia attacking them. Though they were able to push the forces back to the other end of the Moorbound Peaks, the two sides were in a stalemate over the course of a month. Thankfully, calls for clerics and paladins from across the realms were heard and many joined the rebellion, holding back and destroying many of the undead forces. Allowing for a full capture of Grendial Heights.

Infiltration of Melth'rock

After months of heavy fighting, both sides fended off each other at their current holds, losing and gaining ground across the lines until the beginning of 402 AR. By the middle of summer, both sides realized that a risky maneuver would put one of them in a better standing. It was thanks to an upcoming noble within the Golden Rebellion that it would come. Raynar Ossalimar asked for a small contingent among them to attempt an attack on the capital of the Bornassi Kingdom, Melth'rock. Aware that Malithan Bornate and his main generals were spread around the front lines, Raynar was granted a unit of warriors and mages to attempt a stealth attack of the capital.   While this tactic was risky, the group managed to infiltrate the city unseen and start amassing citizens who would join the rebellion. With Malithan distracted attempting his own attack against the Rebellion to take back the Carenvale Fields, Raynar's contingent of the Rebellion struck against the might of the city guard and found many of them untrained, though still possessing some of the undead qualities they had faced previously.   The group worked quickly to take the city, with minimal damage, to force Malithan and his forces further east, losing their capital and center of power in the process. Upon hearing of its defeat, Malithan turned many of his forces back to surround Melth'rock attempting a siege. This hubris and need for the city forced the Bornassi forces to have to retreat across the Mayvel Pass towards The Marreach and Daunka Shore.

The Best Laid Plans

For the next 5 years, the Rebellion had begun planning for their successful winning of the war, assuming that they were going to defeat the Bornassi. As a result of their quick thinking and bold decisions, many among the Rebellion called Raynar Ossalimar their leader and swore loyalty to their house, which had already helped fund much of the war. They would take the newly named Golden Vale as reward, while other ancient ancestral homes would be given back to those who still had living houses. This was the plan by 408 AR, when the Bornassi made a major counter-attack.   Overwhelmed by a force made mostly of undead soldiers, commanded by Malithan Bornate, the city of Melth'rock found itself collapsing under the might of the force. Many among the Golden Rebellion were killed in the Bone Slaughter, but it reminded many among the forces that they were still at war, even if no major events had happened for 5 years. For Raynar, they took it that their victory wasn't certain, even now. By the time the summer of 409 AR came around, the city of Melth'rock was back in the hands of the Rebellion, but its supplies and structures were nearly completely unusable.

A Desperate End

There were many conflicts that lead to the end of The Vale War, most of which were won by the Golden Rebellion as Malithan Bornate had seemingly become more cruel with his tactics, sending more soldiers to die than focusing on strategy. By the start of 411 AR, most of his army were undead under his control rather than soldiers. Naval forces and a swelling infantry had taken both the Daunka Shore and the Marros Valley by this time, leaving only the Marreach in the hands of Bornate. It is said that after his last great defeat at the battle of Solimar, Malithan retreated to the Livewood Forest, where he was hunted down by Raynar Ossalimar and his forces. This brought the war and the reign of Bornate to an end, not in a bang, but in a whimper in a forest.

Conclusion

The execution of Malithan Bornate was a public spectacle, the end of a tyrannical ruler, leading to the growth of a new nation to take its place. As promised, Raynar Ossalimar was give the title of King to align with the goals of the Rebellion to instill a new ruler. For the 35 years of his rule, King Raynar Ossalimar, looked to establish a more harmonious way of living, with the title Empire being more hopeful.   Many of the citizens of the lands were still given their homes and lands, with many being returned to those who escaped Bornassi when things were at its darkest. The continent was renamed Ossalimar in the name of the family that freed so much of the continent from the power of a tyrant. The cursed land of Melth'rock was burned and new cities were founded to accommodate the growing population of the Empire.   The Empire was made up of the Golden Vale, with the other regions becoming devolved city states over the enxt 3 years, developing under their own leaders while closely linked to the Empire. Though this arrangement did not sit right with Raynar, as many of the leaders of these regions seemed to not follow the practices and positions of the Empire. Leading on to the Ossalimarian Conquest, where Raynar sought to unite the regions under one banner rather than the many it had now become.
