Igneous Shard

Rising high above many mountains, the Igneous Shard stands tall with plumes of smoke constantly rising from its peak.
— Journal of an explorer.

The Igneous Shard is one of the central volcanos on the central island of Tokevis. The volcano is the home of Skarnveldrung, a large forge for the Fire Giants who dwell under the volcano. The peak of the volcano has also recently become the home for Daerevsurrthriin, the Rimefire Tyrant.

Description

Amidst the mountains of The Glacial Crown, there stands two large peaks, one a large mountain made of a bright white rock that almost glistens along the skyline, however, its peak seems to have been destroyed in a large explosion. The other The Igenous Shard, which looks craggy like a jagged tooth in the lanscape. Often thick black smoke can be seen arising from its peak into the skyline. Small streams of magma fall down from the sides of the Igneous Shard, causing small lakes of lava in the frozen wasteland of Tokevis.

Built deep in the pits of the Igneous Shard is a forge created by the great Vraskon King Yarrmhendr. The largest among the fire giants, Yarrmhendr forged a channel that allowed several Magnamancers to use the molten lava from the volcano as a way to heat precious metals and create items of great reknown. Over time, the area deep underneath the Igneous Shard grew into a Vraskon settlement known as Skarnveldrung, a citadel made of black igneous rock and forged with nearly impenetrable defenses.   By 755 AR, a group of 300 fire giants reside within Skarnveldrung and use their ability to control the magma to provide arms to several giant cities across the realm. One of their most notable inventions is the dark steel magical implements that are used by Yarrmhendr to keep him sustained in life for his elderly age. These inventions and the people's knowledge of ancient runes has allowed them to survive nearly undetected for several centuries. One of the scholars who once obtained access to the citadel even surmised that this group were able to survive the later end of The Shatter due to their decision to live under a biome that is contrary to their nature.

History

The Igneous Shard was brought, alongside all of Tokevis, up during The Shatter. Some people believe that the Igneous Shard and its sister mountain the Skyshield Peak, were the attempts by two primordial figures Krelva and Jhyaxhla arising from their ancient prisons to join The Deceiver Gods in their battle. In these tales, the duo were stopped and halted in their arrival, leading to the formation of the two peaks.   During the fall of the sky cities, three large cities fell in the area where Tokevis stands now, leading it to be a conclave of strange magics and ruins. The Igneous Shard was thankfully not hit by such a powerful strike, but many believe that the reason such a strong volcanic presence can be felt is due to the existence of strong magical energies disrupting the natural flow of temperature and weather within the region.   The first known successful attempt to scale the Igneous Shard was completed by a collection of adventurers during 583 AR. In this time, they learned of the massive lava lakes and the existence of Skarnveldrung. However, this group lost a member who was struck down by a collection of Magmatic Eels. They reported their findings to a member of the Obsidian Forge. Since then several expeditions to learn more about the Igneous Shard and its strange inhabitants have been mounted by several powerful organizations looking to learn more from the historical and natural value of such an unusual volcano.

By 649 AR, people had become aware of the presence of a dragon who had settled their lair among the top of the Volcano. Daerevsurrthriin, the Rimefire Tyrant has been studied as one of the few ancient dragons who remain in the realm. However, something deep and dark has corrupted them, leading them to slaughter many across the arctic wastes. Several white and silver dragons have attempted to challenge them for control over the mountain, but have found themselves enthralled by the Rimelord Tyrant's magical abilities.   In 703 AR, it had been known that the Rimefire Tyrant had come to blows with the giants of Skarnveldrung. The battle, according to those who bore witness, ended in a seeming stalemate as the few who were able to witness the clash saw a towering Yarrmhendr, sustained by the magical apparatus that keep him alive, and Daerevsurrthriin both brought low by the other. It seems that since, there have been occasional clashes between the dragon and the giants, but that mostly, they seem to be wary of each other.

The Igneous Shard is such a great name for a volcano. Love that it is home to a great forge too.
