Eco-September
Every now and then something appears on WorldAnvil that captures my inspiration enough to make it a focus. This September this has been the idea from Mochi which combined some of the principles of Galaxy24.
Now I started taking part in Galaxy24, but never managed to finish it due to a busy year. However, the challenge being completed by Mochi to write about species for each day in September, leading to a total of 32 different species. Each week they are taking one of these species and creating a more complete article from it. You can read more about Mochi's personal challenge here.
My challenge is similar, even though this article is being written later into the month. I want to write about 30 new species, however I am going to wait until the end of the month to decide which ones are going to become articles, with limited exceptions. I hope to make at least 2 articles from this list, but that's an extra and optional goal. This is to give me the freedom to work on not only other challenges, but also to give myself less pressure to complete something more completed.
Unlike Mochi, I am not entirely focusing on developing a single eco-system in this challenge. However, I am looking to try and have the different creatures from each week of September be from a similar region of the world to flesh out some specific eco-systems.
The last part of the challenge for me is to try and get a artistic representation of my species. I am an artist by no means, but I really want to work on developing an artistic style particularly as I look towards the end of the year and WorldEmber (its coming). I want to have a better ability to visualize what I am writing and to add more polish to many of my articles.
Goals
- 30 New Species
- 2 New Species Articles (Optional)
- A few drawings for creatures
- Fleshed out ecosystems
Week One - Dolvalyn Wastes
The first week looks in on the Dolvalyn Wastes, a region scarred by the might of The Deceiver Gods as they took dominion over this place during The Shatter. The lands are covered with a constant ash cloud and vegetation is rare if at all. This leads to a mass of strange and unique creatures that can arise in a land such as this.
Each entry this week includes a quote from a new character for me. Hlastrin Steelklath, a Goblin natural historian who has spent many years trying to catalogue various creatures around the Dolvalyn Sovereignty.
Day 1: Mat'thron
Info
Creature Type: Beast (Reptile)Average Lifespan: 8 to 12 years
Average Size: 4 to 8 feet long
The Mat'thron is a large black snake that is most commonly found as it leaps from the ground at anything that it sees as a potential meal or threat. Their body seems to be made up of set of thick black scales that have been described as similar to a dragon's hide. Yet they possess no eyes to speak of, using their tongue as their only sense of what is around them.
I am always charmed by the might of snakes. Yet, even the most skilled Nature Historians would find themselves taken aback as the Mat'thron leaps from the deep crevices of the wasteland. Their eyeless form leaping for the neck without any form of hesitance and trying to strike with a venomous and lethal force.
Day 2: Qurenda Crab
One would not often expect a crab in the middle of a wasteland, but thanks to pockets of strange magical water throughout the land, the Qurenda Crab has managed to thrive. However, they have been magically enhanced over the centuries and have grown to an immense size. Towering over most mortals, the Crab is known as one of the more apex predators in the wastelands.
Info
Creature Type: Beast (Crustacean)Average Lifespan: 25 to 30 years
Average Size: 15 to 20 feet wide
When traversing the wastes of the heretic gods, I would personally recommend staying away from water. When you find yourselves within the claws of a creature three times your size, you'll be considering many different decisions that led you there. My frie- colleague was only able to escape due to magic allowing him to teleport from the crabs strong clutches.
Day 3: Hlynoss
Info
Creature Type: Beast (Bird)Average Lifespan: 3 to 8 years
Average Size: 2 to 3 feet long
Considered by many natural historians to be the "sky rats of the wastes", Hlynoss are related to many different sea birds and vultures in their feeding patterns, finding whatever they can scavenge and taking it for their own. Many of them are the same size as large eagles letting them easily swoop down on most mortals and pick at whatever food they have on their person, or flesh from their person.
I hate the Hlynoss, with a burning and intense passion. I am not a fan of birds in the first place, but they make it impossible to sit still even for a moment. I just wish there were a way to deter them from my life even further than I already have. I find that packing food in a magical container is the only way to avoid their ire and attacks. Cheeky buggers!
Day 4: Oritte Turtle
Creatures of an unusual size are not uncommon in the magical wasteland of the Dolvalyn Wastes. The Oritte Turtle is named for the unusual crystals that form along its shell. The dark orange crystals seem to form as if they were fungi expanding, yet they seem to have no effect on the Turtle's mood. Over many years, the colossal Turtles have become the main source of transportation across the wastes, giving many adventurers and scholars respite from the strange fauna and flora below.
Info
Creature Type: Beast (Reptile)Average Lifespan: 200 to 250 years
Average Size: 15 to 20 feet long
When you have a strong creature like the Orrite Turtle, it is just as imperative that you focus on protecting it as much as harnessing it. I was fortunate to ride on an Orrite Turtle when I was young, allowing me to discover many of the intricacies of its anatomy and capabilities.
Day 5: Ulthrenna
Info
Creature Type: Beast (Insect)Average Lifespan: 1 to 2 years
Average Size: 10 to 20 inches long
While there are many large creatures, the Ulthrenna is a small insect
Day 6: Demarhna
Info
Creature Type: MonstrosityAverage Lifespan: 12 to 16 years
Average Size: 7 to 9 feet long
Day 7: Cavstava
Info
Creature Type: MonstrosityAverage Lifespan: Unknown
Average Size: 60 to 80 feet long
Week Two - Aonis Wilds
Day 8: Ilthranos
Info
Creature Type: Beast (Mammal)Average Lifespan: 10 to 15 years
Average Size: 3 to 4 feet tall
Day 9: Mulvara
Info
Creature Type: Celestial BeastAverage Lifespan: at least 500 years
Average Size: 10 to 15 feet long
Day 10: Xhi-loa Falcon
Info
Creature Type: Beast (Bird)Average Lifespan: 5 to 9 years
Average Size: 1 to 2 feet long
