Space Race
"Welcome, to the annual Space Race competition! I hope you are all looking forward to seeing the quality of this year's spaceships and racers."
The Space Race was an annual competition where teams would build a spaceship from scratch and race it on a designated track. The track would be different each year, so that newer teams had a fair chance at winning. The Space Race took place in isolated or abandoned solar systems, which were far from Earth.
From its inception, there were forty-five races held throughout the Galaxy. However, the races became less frequent when the Aliki invaded Novaca a few decades earlier. Since then, two more races were held before the Aliki landed on Quadrilore and invaded the planet.
Notable Races
Many races were dangerous, despite the organiser’s best efforts to make them safer. The most memorable races were usually the ones where things went wrong, either on the track or even before the new season started.First Race
The first race remains one of the most memorable ones because people were excited for the new event that brought people across the Galaxy together. The first race was held on an abandoned Lumiway, which had been modified to be safe for people to race.At the track, many spaceships fell apart before the races actually began, and out of 50 ships, only ten actually got to race.
Third Race
The third race was more notable than the first because it was the first time a dangerous planet was used as a track. The planet was the most voted option, and so the organisers tried to make it work. Despite their efforts, which included crash courses on the planet’s geography, the third race was not very safe. It became known for being the race where 90% of spaceships crashed within the first two laps. Afterwards, the organisers decided to use abandoned Lumiways for their next races.First Student Race
During the 20th season, the original organisers stepped down, and new organisers came in their place. They wanted to get younger citizens and students involved in the Space Race. So they found a separate Lumiway for students and imposed a strict set of rules on the event. However, the organisers did not account for the students who wanted speed at all costs. This resulted in many spaceships being too dangerous to drive, and some engines exploded. As a result, student races were discontinued for at least two years as the organisers worked with professionals to create better regulations.
The Unofficial Race
During the 25th race season, the Space Race faced a huge corruption scandal. Many racing teams took subsidies and bribes from their planets’ governments. Race commentators and moderators also took bribes from governments or racing teams. The corruption was so widespread that the organisers had to cancel the 25th race. However, this was a last-minute decision, and in the absence of a race, many groups got together to hold their own. The races went surprisingly well and were enjoyed by many. However, the official organisers refused to endorse the race.
The 40th Race
The 40th race marked the start of a competition between two budding racers, who set out to beat each other in every race. The team’s two racers were well-known for their friendly rivalry and fairness. When one of them came in the top 5 of the 40th race, the two racers challenged each other for the top spot the next year. This happened for the next five races. The Final Races
"From what I have learned, it looks like the final race happened around the time the Aliki started chasing the Quadrilorians from their planet."
When the Aliki invaded Novaca, there was a small uproar, and protests began. As a result, the Space Race was paused after the 35th race to keep everyone involved in the event safe. After a few years, the races started again, but happened every few years instead.
During the 42nd race season, some Aliki were sent to other planets like Quadrilore and Torago to get their resources for their own planet. Over the next few years, many planets stopped sending their teams to the Space Race so they could fight the greater threat at home. The last race was the 45th race, which was billed as a bittersweet goodbye from the organisers and the crew. They expressed a hope that, with time, the Galaxy would come together once more to host some events that brought people together.
