Ghosts
Basic Information
Anatomy
These spirits typically resemble how they had in life. However, some ghosts have an altered appearance due to the nature of their demise. Others are known to be capable of changing their appearance to suit their current disposition. Often this altered appearance is due to the alignment they had in life, revealing the true awfulness of their soul. Sometimes ghosts are observed to be adorned in chains and weights, which some believe to be a warning from the gods to not follow a wicked path.
Biological Traits
Being a form of undead, ghosts have no need for the air, food, drink, or sleep that they formerly required in life. Because of this, ghosts are often likely to neglect the bodily needs of those they possess. They move about by flying. Having incorporeal bodies, they can pass through solid objects. Some are known to use this phasing ability to surprise enemies. When moving they make no noise.
Ecology and Habitats
Ghosts are known to occur in any type of region, but they are most often found haunting areas at night. Ghosts typically are tied to and haunted the area in which they died, unable to wander beyond it, though there are a few mobile forces of them. Sailors who died out at sea alongside their vessel can potentially manifest upon an incorporeal reflection of it.
Places haunted by ghosts tend to emanate sensations of profound sadness, loneliness, and unfulfilled desires. Haunted locations often have certain areas where there are strange noises, sounds they have enjoyed in life, an unnatural silence, an unnatural feeling of cold, or inanimate objects moving around. Though such manifestations will be due to a ghost's presence, the spirit does not consciously manifest them and has no control over them. Noise manifestations are often projected through walls or door and are observed by some to cease as soon as a living creature got close.
Behaviour
A ghost's behavior is typically similar to the personality they had in life. But in some cases, their personalities are altered by the process of death.
The "unfinished business" that drives ghosts varys widely. Some might seek to fulfill an oath, others to relay a message to a loved one, while some might simply desire to have their death avenged. They also tend to get enraged whenever items their bodies are buried with are stolen and will stop at nothing to get them back.
Evil-aligned ghosts are said to hate goodness and all forms of life, being driven by a sense of wickedness and spite. As well as a desire to end the lives of other creatures, in particular those responsible for or connected to its death. For such ghosts it is nearly impossible to negotiate with them.
Sometimes ghosts are unaware that they have died and thus will continually act out the daily routine they had in life. Sometimes ghosts only have fragmented memories of their life.
