Strongly attuned to magic, it's theorised that dwarves once ruled the world.
The dwarves are one of the rarest of the surface races. Very few survived the Shockwave, and most of those who did perished in the following few years as they relearned how to survive in the world. Worse, something about the shockwave cut their fertility rates hugely, with only one mating in five hundred resulting in a pregnancy. Alchemical studies with volunteers since have proven unsuccessful in the few studies made in determining the cause. However, due this combination of factors, many people have decided that the dwarves were in some way responsible for the Shockwave, and they are not well-liked as a result.
Most dwarves live on the edges of civilisation, alone or in small groups. There are a very few primarily-dwarven settlements hidden away in the forests of Epicentre and the jungles of the Southern Continent, but they tend to be small, only consisting of a few stable family groups. Estimates put the total worldwide dwarven population at roughly two thousand, with more than half being in excess of four hundred years old, and at least ten percent having survived the Shockwave personally. There is little drive amongst most dwarves to lower these ratios, as many of the older dwarves share the shorter-lived races' opinions on the cause of the Shockwave.
