Beholders

A species of highly-intelligent but unpleasant sentient beings. They are round-bodied with many eye stalks, one large central eye, a large mouth full of sharp teeth and the ability to float. They were born from the eye that Lugh Lomhfada knocked from his grandfather; Balor/Odin. This eye spawned the first Beholders. They are more or less permanently insane, paranoid, xenophobic and narcissistic. They reproduce through their dreams which warp reality. This warping occasionally creates new beholders or beholder kin. Most live in secluded and well-defended lairs but every once in a while a Beholder will venture into society either as a tyrant or as some form of strange leader. These are exceptionally rare with St. Oculus and the Xanathar as the only living ones in the last 1000 years.
