Farlis

Farlis Geography

Farlis is one of the smaller continents of Niorath but is still quite varied due to its location between temperate and warm zones. Despite its size it still has had a large influence on the world as the origin of Elven society. Although the Avaronian Empire is long gone its legacy can still be felt.

Exploring Farlis

Magicfall

Despite its smaller size the continent of Farlis has had a large impact on the history of the planet in general. Magicfall, which took place near the Cloud Lake, has been the most impactful on the world by far. Even today magic runs wild in the area which caused several floating islands to appear and eternal clouds to remain in the crater of the Cloud Lake.
From the crater of Magicfall the lands were warped by the rampant magic. Although now, several millenia later, the area looks serene, this was not always the case. According to ancient records those closest to the blast were transformed. This led to new strange monstrosities but also to new intelligent species such as Goblins and Hobgoblins, who are believed to have been regular Elves before. The Elves living futher from the blast were changed but in less dramatic ways. Their close proximity to Magicfall caused the various Elven species to be the most magically inclined species in Niorath.
Another effect that Magicfall had on the land was the large amount of Falls that fell down on Farlis. Today central Farlis has an abundant amount of this important magical resource, an advantage that the Elves have used their entire history.

Chaos Areas

Farlis has had its fair share of Chaos disasters as well. The first recorded event was the creation of the Silent Forest during a battle between the Selefer and the Farlian Gnomes. Due to the Selefer using Chaos magic that got out of control the entire region was flooded with magic, corrupting or killing everyone nearby. Today it is a dangerous wasteland of petrified trees, horrifying creatures and a constant magical storm raging above it.
In the Northeast, a similar catastrophe led to the creation of the Bagor Chaos. Once the capital of the Avaronian Empire, it now stands in ruin, with a lingering magical storm raging above the shattered remains of the great central tower. For reasons unknown the storm and the related corruption started to spread from the original boundries in recent years.
Before the fall of the Selefer, the Southern part of Farlis also looked very different. Today the rainforest areas of Farlis are limited to the south western part of Farlis. In the past, however, the Baidan jungle reached much further east into the region that is now the Volker desert. During the final battle between the Selefer and the Avaronians chaos magic was once again used but this time in a different manner. By concentrating chaos magic into the Heart of Athos, a gigantic Ember Crystal, the elemental Fire Magic was amplified in a spectacular way. Instead of only decimating the Avarnonian armies it caused the entire region to be engulfed in flames. Once the magic had subsided the region was forever infused with magic from the Elemental Fire Realm. This led to the creation of the Visar Volcanoes and the Volker desert and also sunk a large portion of the land. Later his area was flooded by the southern sea, leaving only the Visar volcanoes above sea level.

Mountain Ranges

The continent is also home to several mountain ranges of which the Deldir Mountains are the largest. This mountain range covers almost the entire west coast of Farlis with the exception of the Baidan Jungle to the south and the Arenik Forest to the north. Originally it was the home of both the Aina Elves and the Arenik Giants. After the Aina displaced the Arenik, they themselves were displaced by the Daski Elves who originated from the Lower Realms. At the center of the mountains there lies lake Viran which houses the Mofineron capital and contains a large part of the farmlands of the region.
In the eastern penisnula the Elhir Peaks form the border between Varena and the Volker Desert. Although Varena also has a hot climate it does still receive a decent amount of rain. The Elhir Peaks, however, block clouds from reaching the Volker desert from the eastern side. This lack of rain coming from the east in combination with the Visar Volcanoes causing rain to not reach the area as well makes the Volker Desert especially arid.
The Doromir Mountains surround the country of Carthen and contain the highest mountains in Farlis. Once it was the final barrier around the capital region of the Avaronian Empire. When the empire fell the mountains prevented the Chaos storm from reaching other parts of Farlis. Today it is home to several underground Dwarven cities some of which even predate the fall of the Avaronian Empire.
The central region of Farlis is also home to several smaller mountain ranges which played a part in history as well as they formed a barrier between the northern and Southern parts. The Avaronian Empire built two long walls here, the Handerlith and Sanderlith walls. These ensured that the Selefer to the south had great difficulty reaching the northern regions.

Forests

Farlis has several larger forested regions such as the Izim forest. In ancient times this area was the home region of the Mofae Elves until they were forced further west by both the Selefer and Avar Elves. Although the forest lies mostly in populous Mervidel, it is kept in a rather pristine state as it is considered a sacred forest in the Noregr Religion.
The new homeland of the Mofae Elves is now the Baidan Jungle. Despite the many Mofae cities there it is kept intact as the Mofae strongly believe in harmony between nature and society. Even the Mofae buildings are meant to imitate nature around it with tree like pillars and canopy style roofs. There are a few roads through the jungle which are kept relatively safe by use of Nature magic. Wild animal attacks are, however, still a possibility so travelling with some protection is still advised.
In the northern part of Farlis the Arenik Forest functions as the last home of the Arenik Giants. Since their population has deminished severely over the centuries there are only small settlements left. The harsh taiga forest is not the most hopspitable but the Giants have found a way to sustain themselves here.
Along the western border of Terios are the Endra Swamps, a rather small area but still the largest marshlands in Farlis. This basin is filled by the streams originating from the nearby mountains and empties eventually into the Oner river. It is a dangerous region and the theatre for many of the local scary stories. For some reason new and strange trees have started growing here.

Lower Realms

The Lower Realms is a large underground area spanning most of the continent. It consist of many smaller an largers caverns all connected through a gigantic maze of tunnels. In the past it used to be populated by the deep kingdoms of Dwarves and Gnomes but when the deeper layers started to be flooded by all kinds of monstrosities those ancient settlements were abondonned.
Only the top layer is sometimes visited these days but most expeditons into the Lower Realms do not return. However, the promise of great treasue from ancient ruins such as those of the Prime Asmer makes some put their lives at stake anyway.
