Summary
The myth claims the overhang used to be an actual mammoth who used her body to shield her children from the endless snowstorm. While her children survived, the unbearable cold froze her where she stood, and upon death, her body merged with the mountain.
Historical Basis
A team of adventurers had come to Deadwinter Mountain to investigate its winter everstorm, and atop the mountain, they found its source: the white dracolich, Malonkmet. Although they defeated the undead dragon, the party was forced to retreat as he used the last of his power to cause a series of avalanches.
The avalanches lasted for days and grew so intense that the adventurers were stuck at the mountain's base using all their power to resist it. As a last-ditch effort, a druid transformed into an oversized mammoth and petrified themself to protect his party for the remainder of the storm.
