Veilmouth Horror

Istiognathus tarachodi is a species of Terastioikolinine Caligobeloid amphibian from Hades.   The Veilmouth Horror or Eldritchian Veilmouth is a peculiar Hadean organism only seldomly sighted by expeditions departing the Styx Station to venture in the depths of the underworld.   Using the dark environment to its advantage, the predator extends the veil-like muscular membranes around the mouth, putting in full display the array of green bioluminescent spots; The arrangement and amount of the spots mimic the appearance of a small shoal of passive females pressionatatids while the bioluminescent Sphaera Lania in the centre mimics a single larger active male, characteristic gender ratio of some monopressioductatids of Hades.   This illusion lures prey to attack the male at the centre of the shoal, clueless about the true nature of its target, making I. tarachodi a very efficient ambush predator.   The blue bioluminescent ring around the mouth is thought to be a signal to scare off potential predators such as the Soulseers by the use of Batesian mimicry.   The amphibian uses the same aposematic signals as true poisonous animals to warn predators about a fake danger by only partially mimicking the signals of the model to selectively scare off unwanted attentions.   Thanks to Negative frequency-dependent selection, the animal can blend with the model even if only partially mimicking it by thriving in environments where the latter is rarer, thus making their phenotype expression more fit.   Being an ambush predator, I. tarachodi doesn't move often, usually preferring to stay still in the water with its hunting apparatus extended.   When moving, the animal will close the membrane to reduce drag, moving the retractable arm-like armour sections to the sides of the body, assuming a more hydrodynamic shape.   Given the open nature of its environment, the animal will use its powerful echolocation mostly to avoid bumping on other organisms or to keep track of where the ice ceiling is compared to its position.   The animal gained worldwide media attention when it was first sighted by a tracking camera installed on the Ice ceiling, which captured the mysterious creature ambushing prey, sparking a new wave of interest in the ecosystems of Hades and kickstarting a new race to discover what else lurks in the dark waters of the underworld.

Basic Information

Anatomy

  • Head small compared to the body, cranial armour barely segmented and very reduced.
  •
  • Presence of a large retractable hemi-triangular membrane on both sides of the head, supported by long stilt-like structures originated by segmentations of the cranial armour.
  •
  • Jugular armour composed by a single fork-shaped plate.
  •
  • Pectoral fins moved towards the ventral area of the body, oriented at a 45° angle to the ventral plane.
  •
  • Anal I & II small and rounded.
  •
  • Dorsal I large and rounded, Dorsal II small and hemi-rectangular.
  •
  • Gill Tail very thin, ending in a low Gill Fan.

Genetics and Reproduction

Although not much is known about its reproductive methods, the animal has been observed in trail camera footage in what seemed to be mating fights between two males.   The two animals were facing one another, displaying the full array of bioluminescence on their body to the contender while using the fully extended parapenis in a fencing-like display of strength.   The reproductive organs of both males were being used to try and overpower the other's in what seemed a conflict with no end; unfortunately the footage cuts before either of the two ended the fight, leaving us an incomplete record of the event.   From this footage, however, we were able to understand some major steps in the animal's evolution since the forming of the Hades:
  • The animal's ancestry used to possess color sight, indicated by how the two males were displaying their colors to one another, even if blind
  •
  • The animal originally used bioluminescence for matin purposes, only secondarily adapting it to predatory functions
Aside from this only testament of intraspecific interaction, nothing else is known about their behavior.   A second hypothesis regarding the captured footage is that the fight seen on camera was for territorial purposes, although the intense usage of genitals suggests a closer correlation to reproduction.

Growth Rate & Stages

Ontogeny not known in the species, only adults have ever been sighted.

Ecology and Habitats

Epi- to Mesopelagic species found at depths between 20 and 500 m.   It lives in open waters where prey is most abundant.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Carnivorous animal that feeds on medium sized predators of the dark Hades.   Very efficient ambush hunter, it hunts anything from pressionatatids to pleuropods.

Biological Cycle

Due to the stable conditions of the Hades it is thought to be a periannial species with few dips in activity year long.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Lonesome animal probably very territorial.

Domestication

Only once extracted from its natural environment, the captive specimen died of radiation poisoning a week after capture due to the lowered production of the enzyme TRSE β-e54 DNA Prostatase due to the low radiation habitat in which it lives.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Of no usage to humanity due to the inaccessibility of its native habitat.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Inner section of the Hades

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Overdeveloped echolocation, good hearing.

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

Damage in one specimen's mouth membrane suggests there might be a parasite that eats it however no parasites have been directly sighted on the species.

Oooh, what a cool yet creepy fishy. Love the design. Reminds me of some of our own weird sea creatures that are out there.

Interesting species!! I love the way they look, very weird but also cool. If I may make a quick formatting suggestion, some of the information could be moved to the sidebar? Great article!

For some reason, I really like the idea that their is insufficient data for some of the sections.
