Rainbow Alamaninia

Alamaninia arcuscaelestii is a medium-large sized amphibian of the Bubble Sea.   It lives in small to medium pods of three to twelve specimens, only one of which male, in the lower section of the forest, swimming between the great tree's trunks.   The vibrant coloration reflects the habitat it lives in, with several regional variants relegated to certain islands in the archipelago, all genetically different from the others and visibly different in size and coloration.   The type species Alamaninia arcuscaelestii angelii (pictured above) is the biggest member of the genus and the most common. This subspecies lives in open waters at low depths traversing the spaces between the islands composing the archipelago; this subspecies by itself is the only link that keeps all the other subspecies from fully speciating, creating a ring species.   Widely considered a majestic sight to see, this animal and the surrounding environment have become the target for many touristic activities, some of which of negative impact on the delicate environment. Strong economic interests in the area prevent the environmentalist parties to act and regulate tourism to preserve these areas.   Some subspecies of A. arcuscaelestii are considered now to be endangered due to anthropic activity on the islands they are found.   The large scale culling of prey animals such as the Red Thorny Demon , considered pests for bubble syrup farming, is also contributing in this species' decline.

Basic Information

Anatomy

  • Cranium quadrate.
  • Teeth very long, jetting outward.
  • Very evident Maxillary gap.
  • Cranial armor fused with very garish ornamentations; Fronto-Temporal plate extrudes fronto-dorsally forming a crest.

  • Body very high and rounded.

  • Pectoral fins very large and leaf shaped; dorsal I and II reduced.
  • Anal I almost atrophic, Anal II very well developed.
  • Frontal appendages jet out of the fronto-ventral section of the body, probably derived from a third pair of Anal fins.

  • Gill tail short ending in a very smooth Gill Fan with low ridges and a soft Caudal drop.

Genetics and Reproduction

Polyginous species.   The species will mate during the Bubble tree blossoming season, when prey is most abundant.   The male may be challenged by wondering bachelors for dominance over the gyneceum; dominance is determined by size and color of the animal; additionally the length of the frontal appendages acts as a tie breaker type of display feature. It's not uncommon, however, that two males start fighting over mating privileges.   The male will then mate with all the females, fertilizing them one by one with little courtship ritual.   Females will harbor the eggs inside the ducts for seven to ten days, laying them on the surface of Bubble tree trunks, where they'll finish incubating.   The newborns will seek shelter in the denser sections of the forest where they'll hunt smaller amphibians and invertebrates.

Growth Rate & Stages

The young specimens will remain in the denser forest for the first eight months of their life, growing and progressively moving to more open spaces to eventually reach the open sea where they'll wonder off to find their own territories.   Sexual maturity at one year and a half of age.   Loss of natal aculeus one month after birth.   Ontogenesis visible in the species; young specimens will be eel-like and flat.

Ecology and Habitats

Epipelagic species found at depths between 10 and 150 m.   Wants vasts territories to roam in with clean, warm, water and plenty of food.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Very active predator feeding on several amphibians.   The diet will change drastically throughout its lifecycle; young specimens are known to feed on Red Thorny Demons and other such smalll amphibians.

Biological Cycle

Periannial species with no changes in activity during the year due to the abundance of prey items.
