Summer Camp 2024 Prep
Week 1: Change
Assignment 1
Wow! There is so much change in all of my worlds!
- Nideon: Is literally on the cusp of THe Great War of Nideon. Many countries are embroiled in various conflicts that are about to come to a head. Specifically, the Ethite goverment has switched over, Antarand is pushing harder to be recognized as independent from Florarova, and the sprites of Zenxon are fighting for equality. The world is in turmoil. Change is imminent.
- The Overlap: On a more personal note, Hailey Agustin is about to discover that the Tenganaw aren't the only people with magic running around.
- Milon: Similar to Nideon, conflict is brewing, specifically in regards to the Bronzewalker Rebellion.
Assignment 2
I usually shoot for the Diamond Badge, but something is telling me that I should give myself permission to write fewer this year. So I'm to make my goal silver this year (though at least a part of my still wants the diamond. We'll see what happens.) I would put the pledge here, but quite frankly, I just don't have the energy to bother (see, this is why I lowered my goal this year.)
Assignment 3
I've got my categories for Nideon and Milon good to go:
- Nideon: organized geographically, like an atlas (hint: I like to also use the "previous" and "next" article features to connect articles to things are related in ways other than geography.)
- The Overlap: organized according to the 13 (soon to be 15?) different magic styles.
I don't actually remember what my category system for Milon is, so I should probably go over that again. As for tags, I've never had a good idea how to use them, so I might spend some time looking at what other people do, but I think that's a more long-term project.
Assignment 4
I think my Nideon meta is pretty solid. As I recall, I spent time on the metas for both The Overlap and Milon last year and lost all my work (oh no!!) But instead of focusing on those, I've spending time in The Overlap re-doing my articles on the 13 main magic systems, which are the backbone of that world. The secondary half of that is to do some tweaking with my genre and time period, but that will probably continue after and through Summer Camp. Milon is just going to have to wait, as it's the lowest priority of the three worlds.
Week 2: Refuge
Assignment 1
Another fantastic theme for all of my worlds! More specifically, I think of:
- Nideon: my main character, Matsias Beleed, who is looking for refuge among the Thisaazhou and at Faraday School for Wizards.
- The Overlap: The Scavengers (possibly?) providing refuge for those who don't fit into the other 12 magical communities.
- Milon: The Dhadiz looking for refuge from the Jadinth, the community among the "Voiceless," and the Bronzewalker Rebellion
Assignment 2
Usually, it's my friend, Haley, that gets with me about worldbuilding in the summer. I try to spend time in the discord, but I find it's hard to both chat and worldbuild, so I might designate a certain time each day to discord chats. Likewise, I like to watch the Twitch streams, but I tend to spend more time waching than working (please let me know about any co-working streams! I want in!) Other than that, I commit to read as many articles as I can and comment on everything I read, just like I did last year. (I actually felt like this was more effective at breaking into the WA community than hanging out in the Discord anyway.)
Assignment 3/4
I've played around with styling a teeny-tiny bit, but with my low proficiency in CSS, that tends to be pretty time-consuming, even for small changes. I have some ideas for what I might like to do, if I can, but I know it will be a slow process. In the meantime, I'll probably put more focus into finishing my category headers for the Overlap. This will be time consuming too, but I already have the expertise for it.
Week 3: Belief
Assignment 1
What another fabulous prompt for my worlds!! I love developing religions, languages, myths, and cultures. A little more specifically:
- Nideon: is filled with myths and legends. One of the major themes of the world is stories, where they come from, and how they change (i.e. how truth evolves into myth and how myth, sometimes, evolves into truth.)
- The Overlap: There's the big belief that magic is dead, or mostly dead (it's not), as well as the beliefs of some about bringing magic back or putting it back together. Then there are individual beliefs held by the 13 magic groups (and subgroups thereof). Some, like the Illusionists, are even centered on belief.
- Milon: A lot of this involves differnt political ideologies conflicting with one another, especially beliefs about who is superior, inferior, safe, and dangerous.
Assignment 2-4
I've actually been going through all my music (I have a very eclectic collection--everything from saxophone orchestra to yidcore) and grouping them according to different parts of my world. Hopefully, these will make good listening during Summer Camp. I also keep picture albums on Unsplash, and when I'm feeling frisky, even draw my own! (Actually, I recently found a 1964 Staves of Airrin Underwood Nideon calendar that I was making back in college! That will probably come in handy.
Week 4: Decay
Assignment 1
To be honest, this is the one prompt I'm not that sure about. Then again, I already said there is lots of change, and where there is change, there is bound to be decay. Decay in my world is probably usually ideological, such as...
- Nideon: Decay of certain political ideologies, particularly in Ethion, Suxad, and Zenxon, leading to increased equality and diversity. Also, the decay of Florarova's hold on Antarand, and the continued decay of the Alajan government just... in general.
- The Overlap: The decay of the Head Mistwalker Family, especially considering Florine has pretty much committed herself to not having kids, and therefore ending the line. Time for a new era! Due to the actions of the Librarian and some of his friends, the divisions between magical groups are also decaying (oh wait, that's the whole point of the premise, isn't it?)
- Milon: This is probably the more literal one, what with a pandemic having occurred not to long before the present day in the timeline, and a fear of illness further wiping out society. Though there are probably some ideological shifts happening too.
Assignment 2
This is a great idea. My office is an absolute disaster, and could definitely use some tidying.
Assignment 3-4
My Nideon homepage is pretty good, though I should definitely give my Introduction/Author page a onceover. The home pages for The Overlap and Milon could definitely use some work. I've been meaning to work on the introduction page for The Overlaps since August 2023, but the executive dysfunction monster has gotten in the way. I need to figure out what it takes to get myself to do this (it's literally at the top of my list.)
- Nideon: Is literally on the cusp of THe Great War of Nideon. Many countries are embroiled in various conflicts that are about to come to a head.
