Bright's Charter

Bright's Charter is the oldest known governing document on Nideon. Approximately 2,000 years old, it established the law for the first Brightlindish civilization and subsequent governing documents in the nation have drawn on this original. While such documents for other early civilizations in Nefrale, Brek, and Diamondheart likely existed, they have not persisted as Bright's Charter has.

The charter is attributed to Edward Bright, one of Brightland's first leaders, after whom the modern day country is named, but historians suspect it was likely written by more than one person and may not have been Birght's work at all. The original charter established a runhyub, who served as a single leader alongside a council of advisors, likely similar to Nefrale's Council of Races. It also established civil rights for the Brightlindish people which the runhyub could not violate. Most notable among these was a process by which the people could declare the runhyub unfit for the position. This provision in particular has appeared in one form or another in nearly all of Brightland's governing documents. It has also been enacted at least twice, in 1192 and again in 1634, when Brightland's current constitution was established.

Bright himself is said to have used this provision to support the separation of the Dekani to the south and the Elves to the north, against the advice of his council. Due to Brightland's strong relationship with both Dekani and Suxad, modern day historians view this as a wise decision, and may have ultimately led to the original charter being credited to Bright.
