Abysmal Metals

When the creature touched the blade, it recoiled and there was a great hissing as its flesh began to bubble and burn. The gnawing continued up the arm and across the chest and soon all its skin writhed as if with maggots. With a final shriek, the thing collapsed into a pile of bones and tendon upon the ground and was no more.   And so the sword of Broghy was christened as a blade blessed by the divine and placed in the Sanctum of Suns for all to gaze upon. And when one does look upon the astatine blade, their eyes grow irritated and their ears ring with pain as the blade judges them according to their sins.
-- The Book of Ealoy
On the Earth, all things are blessed with the presence of Magic, more commonly called Earth Impel. Though not necessary for survival of any one being, the totality of this power enforces balance by facilitating the flow of energy through all things. But there are some things of Earth which resist this Impel and, in some cases, alter or destroy it. The knowledge of these materials and their properties was first known by the gods and eventually fell into the hands of ordinary people. Called the Abysmal Metals, the use of the metals have shaped history, from giving the gods the upper hand in the wars against the Earthenborn to the creation of lifesaving inventions.

Properties

There are twelve metals with the formation of alloys possible between some types. Each metal has unique properties though they generally fall into three categories
  • Inductive: to force out and displace magic
  • Corruptive: to change magic into another form or change its behavior
  • Annihilative: to destroy magic
Most metals are inductive in nature and are used simply to ward off Earthen creatures or block such a creature's powers. Corruptive metals are rarer, typically requiring alchemical conditioning of base metals to achieve the desired effect. Most unstable and dangerous are the Annihilative metals which are chiefly made for violent purposes. As humans and all creatures contain some measure of Earth Impel, handling corruptive and annihilative metals on their own is extremely dangerous.
