Satyr

Satyrs, a race of humanoids with goat-like properties, are the mortal brethren of Krotos, God of Woodlands and Hunting. They are a frivolous race that tends to live near the edge of the forest in troupes of twenty to a hundred individuals; keeping close enough to other races to trade and talk, but far enough away to stay relatively isolated in their day-to-day lives.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Satyrs posses humanoid bodies, if a little short, with human torsos and legs that terminate in a cloven hoof. Thick fur of the same colour as the hair on their head covers their legs, which are powerfully built. This fur can reach anywhere from mid-thigh up to the waist, and shorter leg-fur is generally an indicator of many non-Satyr ancestors. Male Satyrs have curled horns growing from their heads, while females have small nubs sprouting in the same spot. The only other non-human features of a Satyr are their ears, which are goat-like and extend out from the sides of their head where a human's ears would be; and short, fluffy tails at the base of their spine.

Genetics and Reproduction

Satyr reproduction is not different from humans in any meaningful way. The The Grace Of Psyche allows them to mix with any other race in New Atlantis. Satyrs with a non-Satyr father will tend to inherit many more visible traits from them than their mother, especially hair and eye colour.

Growth Rate & Stages

Satyrs mature at about the same rate as humans, becoming adults between 14 and 18 years of age.

Ecology and Habitats

Larger troupes can only function if their forest has a river or other consistent source of fresh water and fish, while smaller ones will often set up easy-to-move camps near the edges of a forest where they can draw the attention of travelers to trade for hard to get supplies. Some smaller troupes of Satyrs have actually been known to set up in hills or plains outside of the forest and build wooden structures similar to humans; but this is uncommon and those hamlets are frequently abandoned, only to be re-inhabited by another group that comes across the houses.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Satyrs eat a lot of fish and meat, with berries and other things foraged from their surroundings to supplement. They often keep herds of sheep, both for food and wool, as well as goats. Satyrs enjoy making various kinds of cheeses from goat's milk, and that cheese is their biggest trade commodity.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Satyrs live in troupes of twenty to one hundred, with a single leader chosen for being either the eldest or most knowledgeable in the troupe. An exception for this is made when a Satyr is born who turns out to be an Inheritor, a Satyr with vaguely divine powers. An Inheritor is made their troupe's leader as soon as they can be considered of-age. Having an Inheritor as a leader will make a troupe's voice carry more weight when they interact with other troupes, though that is exceedingly rare.
To prevent overcrowding an area, when a troupe gets to be too large they will send groups of young Satyr out on quests to find new homes for themselves. Sometimes these Satyr will start a brand new troupe, but many times they will end up subsumed by a smaller troupe they come across in their travels. Satyr look down on those of their kind that willingly choose to leave their troupe to strike out on their own, unless it is done to remain with a husband or wife that is not a Satyr.

Facial characteristics

Male Satyr often grow short, thick beards and have generally soft-looking faces.
Female Satyr have similarly innocent-looking faces by human standards, with large doe-eyes.

Average Intelligence

Satyrs develop at the same rate as humans, mentally, and have a predilection for exploration and discovery. Few Satyrs can deal with being inside long enough to acquire significant book learning, but they are well known for having general knowledge of the natural world.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Satyrs have strong senses of smell and hearing. About one Satyr in one thousand is blessed with a natural divine power that lets them use magic through pan pipes; these Satyr are more attuned to natural magic than most. Females have larger eyes than males, and slightly better eyesight as a result.

Satyrs, like Centaurs, despise the Avian Gods. Unlike Centaurs, Satyrs will not kill children gifted with star magic outright; however they are treated as a second class, and shunned from the troupe if they ever show signs of developing their power.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Satyrs generally use things they encounter in nature when naming their children, though this may not be readily apparent to outsiders. Satyrs love word play, but hate killing a joke by explaining it. This results in many just smiling and nodding when Satyrs laugh at a joke only they get.

Beauty Ideals

Satyr women are attracted to strength and physical stamina, and men will meticulously clean, shape, and sharpen their horns to have the most imposing figure. Meanwhile, the most erotic part of the body to a Satyr man is the eyes, the larger and clearer the better. Women will use makeup to make their eyes look larger and brighter when they are trying to get a man's attention. Both genders equate cleanliness with beauty to a large degree, and white garments are commonly worn as a way of demonstrating how carefully one maintains their appearance.

Gender Ideals

Satyrs have no major discrimination between men and women in their troupes, though woman are more frequently in charge of taking care of young children than their fathers.

Common Etiquette Rules

When staying as a guest of Satyrs it is common courtesy to leave anything you would be offended to see in the hands of another in a closed pack or other container.
Because Satyr specifically value items that are still in the hands of their creator, they generally only trade directly with farmers or craftsmen and don't truly understand the concept of a traveling merchant that sells random wares.
Fouling a white cloth or garment belonging to a Satyr is a grave offense; and refusing to offer restitution, generally in the form of new lengths of white cloth, can lead to blows.

Common Dress Code

Satyrs wear wool and linen clothes, with a preference towards white, cream, and other light colours that evoke the idea of "purity." When Satyrs are hunting, either food or monsters, they wear padded linens that are a darker colour, but rarely are they brown, grey, or black.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Satyr do not ascribe value to objects in the same way that other races often do. Objects with everyday use are considered communal property for everyone around, this includes things like pots and pans or farming implements. Personal possessions are generally only considered valuable if they have a story with said item; and new things have a tendency to change hands frequently until a Satyr develops a story or other sentimental attachment to it, being treated as more or less communal until that time. This does not extend to things that a person makes for themselves, to take the work of another's hands from them without offering a fair trade is sacrilege to a Satyr.
Satyr living among other races sometimes get into trouble for this, as they simply cannot understand why their neighbor would be mad at the Satyr taking and wearing a new necklace or using a new ax without asking or returning it.

Common Taboos

Stealing the work of a craftsman from him is the greatest sin among Satyrs, followed by taking something with deep value to the owner. A Satyr who is branded as a thief in their people's eyes effectively lose their rights as beings and are treated as animals by their kin.

Common Myths and Legends

Satyrs and Centaurs possess a deep-seated racial hatred of the Avian Gods; Isis, Osiris, Horus, and Nephthys. This is rooted in the fact that Pan, the mythological father of Satyrs and the first God of the Woodlands, is dead due to their interference. This myth has existed since the Wandering Gods returned and brought Chiron and Cybelle, as well as the Avian Gods in question, to New Atlantis.
