Mountains Whisper

Type: Two-Handed Greatsword

Condition: Worn but meticulously maintained

The Mountain's Whisper is a weathered greatsword with a history as complex as Fordare herself. Forged of layered steel with a subtle damascene pattern that resembles intricate mountain ridges, the blade bears the marks of countless battles yet shines with the care of a devoted owner. The crossguard is etched with dwarven runes—a blessing from Dumathoin, barely visible unless caught in the right light. The leather grip, replaced multiple times by Fordare's own hands, is wrapped in a way that speaks of both functionality and deep personal connection.

Significance and History

This sword was a gift from Thorgrim Stoneheart on the day Fordare left Phandalin to join the Mintarn Aegis. Passed down through generations of dwarven warriors in Thorgrim's clan, the weapon was never meant to be wielded by a non-dwarf. Yet Thorgrim saw in Fordare a spirit more dwarven than many of his blood relatives—stubborn, loyal, and unbreakable.

The sword represents more than a weapon to Fordare. It is:

  • A symbol of her adoption into the Stoneheart family
  • A connection to her dwarven upbringing
  • A physical manifestation of her spiritual bond with Dumathoin
  • A reminder of her purpose and the promise she made to protect those who cannot protect themselves

Small modifications show Fordare's personal touch—a leather loop at the pommel where she occasionally ties a small pouch of mountain crystals, a quiet offering to Dumathoin. The blade has been carefully maintained, the edge always sharp, the surface free of significant rust despite its age. Each scratch and minor imperfection tells a story of survival, of battles fought, of challenges overcome.

When Fordare received the sword, Thorgrim spoke words she would never forget: "A weapon is more than steel. It is the soul of the one who wields it, the story of those who came before, and the promise of protection for those who will come after."
