Calendar and Festivals in New Neverwinter
The Lords Alliance use the Derrin calendar (named for the chronurgy wizard who invented it). This calendar has 12 months, each three weeks long (In dnd, a "week" refers to ten days, often called a "tenday". If I ever say a week in dnd, I mean 10 days not 7).
Each month also coincides with almost a full lunar cycle of 30 days. An entire year is thus 360 days long.
This makes it rather uniquely a lunar and solar calendar. The coincidence of the two systems is a recent development, thought to be a consequence of Lathandars disappearance, and The Selune Supremacy.
The 15th day of every month is a new moon, and the 30th of every month is a full moon.
The months go as:
1: Deepwinter
Holiday: Midwinter, or Newyear. This holiday on the 1st of Deepwinter marks both the beginning of the winter season (Winter solstice) and the the first day of the year. Tradititionally, the celebrations start at midnight on the 30th of Nightal, where fireworks are launched and sweets are eaten. The evening of the 1st is then to be spent with family at home, eating a roasted dinner to celebrate making it through another year.
2: Alturiak
3: Ches
Holiday: Greengrass. Occuring on the 30th day of Ches, this holiday marks the beginning of spring (spring equinox). It's customary on this day to decorate your home, clothes and hair with colourful wildflowers. Snowdrops, daffodils and bluebells are popular. Wearing yellow on this festival is considered to bring good luck for the rest of the year. Whoever forms the most beautiful bouquet is called the "reeve of greengrass". This holiday also marks the closest approach between the feywild and the material.
4: Stormclaw
5: Melting
Holiday: Deluge (Luskan and Mirabar only), in Luskan this holiday has no set day, occuring whenever the river Mirar begins it's annual flooding. It's considered a time to wash away previous griefs or anxieties from the year so far.
6: Kythorn
Holiday: Highsun. Occuring on the 30th day of Kythorn, this marks the beginning of summer in the Sword Coast (Summer Solstice). A time of jubilation, the evenings of midsummer are usually spent dancing and drinking, and eating flame-grilled food. In Neverwinter specifically, this holiday is sometimes called "Aumanatax", after the God of the sun, as it's his longest (and therefore holiest) day. An annual sermon is held here open to all in the cathedral of light. It's also customary for light clerics to waive any fees on healing spells for this day, so it's a time for healing for many
7: Summertide
8: Midsummer
Holiday: Shieldmeet. The 15th of Midsummer. This holiday traditionally occurs once every 4 years, and is considered an important time for warriors to meet together and share stories of their adventures. In recent times, this is when the Royal Contest occurs (The contest is an annual event. The meeting of heroes still only happens every four years, however)
9: Eleint
10: Leaffall
Holiday: Highharvesttide. Occuring on the 1st of Leaffal, this marks the beginning of autumn (Autumnal equinox). This holiday is often celebrated by a hearty feast of granary breads, beers and roasted vegetables. A time of plenty before winter, it is customary in this holiday to share a piece of food with each of your neighbours, and to wear oranges and browns.
11: Uktar
12: Nightal Song of Greengrass
A traditional song sung around the time of greengrass goes: Just be calm and move with the season
Winter's gone and so has your reason
Daisies bloom and so will desire
Keep your cool and blow out the fire
