Siege of Duervale
Duervale is a strategically important city in the valleys of the Verdant Peaks. First founded by the Dwarves millennia ago, it has long served as a source of conflict between the Dwarves and the Dark Elves. Several attempts were launched by the Dark Elves to capture the city through the centuries, but only the most recent attempt, 130 years ago, proved successful, at great cost. While the Elves could never seem to defeat the Dwarven defenses that surround the ancient city, Dark Elven cunning ultimately won the day. Pursuing a policy of genocide against both the defenders and the civilians in the city, its primary river resources from the surrounding mountains were poisoned with a lethal toxin that felled the native Dwarves in staggering numbers. Well over half the population succumb to the poison, leaving the remaining citizens' morale shattered. The defenders surrendered, leading to a massacre of the remaining Dwarves. Looting and pillaging persisted for a week. Scholars would later conclude that the study of Northern Dwarven culture is forever handicapped by the loss of life, property, and research material. The siege and following genocide remain one of the most notorious and controversial chapters of Daeruin's history.
The Conflict
Prelude
Prior to the military conflict and siege, Emperor Derarose sent a delegation to demand the city's peaceful surrender and annexation by the empire. Offended by the audacity to demand capitulation of such an ancient city without a fight, the cantankerous King Kildrak executed the delegation of Dark Elves. While Emperor Derarose didn't seem to expect the delegation to be successful, this act outraged the people of Daeruin, leading to war.
Battlefield
The Siege took place around the walls of Duervale as well as the surrounding villages and features such as mills, bridges, and forts. In the latter places, land features and sub-features of surrounding villages, small and large armies clashed in battles, skirmishes, and ambushes. However, the main front of The Siege was Duervale proper. Here, soldiers mounted on riding lizards and warhorses, augmented by Wyrmguard soldiers atop wyverns, launched several attacks on the city's walls, supporting siege engines, arcane cannonry, and trebuchets. The ancient magic-resistant walls of the city repelled these attacks with little damage sustained.
Historical Significance
In Literature
Over a century on after the siege ended and the annexation took place, some Dark Elf intellectuals and nobles write and consume literature exalting the heroism of the Dwarves who defended Duervale from the onslaught of the Dark Elves. These writings portray the Dwarves as tragic and defeated by a cunning enemy. Some consider this literature to be condescending, racist, and pretentious, citing the lack of action to alleviate the condition of the Dwarves who remain in the city, let alone returning the conquered city to them.
Technological Advancement
Nefarious as the methods of the Dark Elves were, they made leaps in biological warfare and understanding of poison on Sol. As well, the biological effects on corpses and survivors, and experiments on prisoners, did wonders for the study of the mortal body. Physicians around the continent speak in contrite tones about the breakthroughs in the relevant medical fields due to the siege.
