At the height of the war, Washington DC is destroyed by a nuclear blast set off by Free State agitators. Neither side would gain further ground over the decades to come, leading to a war-torn Virginia that effectively becomes a no-man’s land. Corporations lean heavily on both sides to de-escalate the conflict, lest more company assets be irrevocably destroyed in the fighting. With the United States army effectively fractured forever, Paladin Security Ltd emerges as leaderless generals opt to take their expertise private, recruiting soldiers who no longer have a war to fight to sell their services to the highest bidder.
