The world is one of relatively little magic now. While there are still many who practice magic, there are few magical items, and those that do exist are treasured family heirlooms. Over time, visitors will learn more about the ancient history of the world. You will learn about the cataclysmic event that started the current Age and made magic so much scarcer. 

In the previous Age, magic was abundant - both Arcane and Divine magics. In the Historic Age, many people could create magical items and they were treated as near-disposable. There were a variety of mages who seemed to challenge god-hood, and some who did make that challenge. These attempts sparked a war between those who would challenge the gods, and those who believed that some powers should be left behind the veil.

The war raged, but eventually, it came to a head. An attempt was made to challenge the divine. It was thwarted by those who fought against it and the gods themselves. Unfortunately, the mortal realm was cut off from the divine and much of the magic in the world was destroyed. Thus ended the Golden Age. 

Most magical items were destroyed completely, though some did survive in various states. Many have become cherished heirloom items of the rich or powerful. The majority of those that have survived have remained intact as items, but their magic has been completely drained. 

As time has passed, the history has been lost. And as people naturally do, they have become bolder and more ambitious over time. There are mages now who can make magical items once again. And powerful clerics who can resurrect the dead. While they can make no challenge to the gods now, it is only a matter of time, unless something changes.
