Ethook

The first ethook (ef-uhk) was developed by Carwyn Fourbells and Iudris Who Sees Between of the Rhunya during the Second Great Turbulence. It enables the group to 'fish' in the ethereal plane and use the creatures there as a food source, which was lifesaving during the geographical upheaveal of the second great turbulence, and led to the group developing a permanent normadic lifestyle.

  Dangers
The hook creates a microrift between the material and ethereal plane each time it is used, and if it is used repeatedly in the same place, these microrifts can enlarge and allow poisonous substances to leak into the material plane. In worst cases, creatures can also enter at will. Once the Rhunya realised the danger, they began to travel frequently, staying no more than a week or two in once location before moving on to another area that their sorcerers judge to be a weak point between the two planes.

These microrifts have been witnessed to repair themselves over the course of a couple of years, which led to the Rhunya developing a pattern of travel that repeats every three to four years.

  Related Literature
In the present age, Phantasmal Fishing by @Neirin Potts has been published, detailing the author's experience of fishing in the ethereal plane with an ethook, though no details are given related to the ethook's construction, and the Rhunya claim the book was not written by a member of their group, and probably stole the device they used.

History

When the Rhunya, a disparate group of refugees, were suffering famine as a result of the geographical instability of the Second Great Turbulence, Carwyn and Iudris wanted to find a way to use the unaffected ethereal plane as a source of food, as both were aware of the numerous odd creatures that lived there. They worked with the group's blacksmiths and their few scholars with any level of arcane knowledge to develop the ethook.

Rarity
Ethooks are rare outside of Rhunya groups, as outsiders are rarely trusted to use them with appropriate care and moderation.
Raw materials & Components
The device resembles a fist-sized metal hook, which shifts in colour from green to purple to black and back, which is wrapped in silver filaments. The hook can be made of any malleable metal, though some metals have been found more arcanely resonant than others. This hook must be tuned to the ethereal plane by a trained sorcerer, and once this is done, it can pierce into that plane for thirty to sixty minutes, after which time it will reappear back on the material plane where it was activated.

The filaments serve to attract the creatures of the ethereal plane and can secure a single one once it comes into contact. In the present day, these filaments are made of Mollem Wool, since its arcane resonance makes it effective in work on other planes. However it seems unlikely that the Rhunya would have had access to this rare material during their frantic attempts to survive, so it's probable that they initially made do with cheaper copper filaments. Mollem wool filaments used for this purpose require recharging by a sorcerer once every ten days, or after three successful uses.
