Mythology & Lore

They believe that if your bone is broken, then you have been chosen for death, and you can either die heroically or brutally. To die heroically, they will send you to hunt a creature they deem you can fight, and you do that. And either you’ll die by the beast, or you’ll die in the tribal leader’s hut. However, if you choose not to, they will beat you to death. This is because it is thought that if you were chosen for death and you pick to fight, you were chosen by the good gods. However, if you were chosen for death and you picked cowardice, you were chosen by the bad gods.

Cosmological Views

There are no inherent gods, however they do believe in spirit-like beings, usually are creatures of past Bippies, or past creatures they killed.   Some of these beings are evil, particularly the ones who were not treated well in life, returning for revenge. Those who were treated well in life will either leave alone the Bippies, or they will provide them with help in life.   The most important spirits are the family spirits, spirits of your tribe, and Bip spirits, in that order. Spirits of wild animals are often feared, especially if the those spirits were disrespected after their death, and not given the proper treatment.   The family spirits are most likely to help their descendants in a daily life, fights, love, bragging, etc. Tribe spirits are more likely to help the whole tribe, there are spirits of families who were part of a tribe, helping the whole tribe. Usually in things like hunting and raids. Finally, the Bip spirits can be any spirit from a Bip. They can be from a rival tribe, and thus either cause trouble to one tribe or another. Bip spirits from other tribes do not tend to leave their tribe to another, in their beliefs, but if they do, the shaman must go and dispel it.   They believe there are three realms, the above world, a scary place above the caves where it is so bright it causes your skin to burn. The below world, a scary place below the caves where with such dangerous creatures, no Bip can survive in it for more than a day. Finally, the world, the caves where Bippies live.     They believe you are spiritually intertwined with something of nature at birth. When one is born, they are delegated into a group depending on what natural thing your spirit is intertwined with. Depending on what they are intertwined with shows what they will be in later years. If you connect with the mushroom, you will farm. If you connect with the tree, you will harvest. If you connect with the stone, you will be a fighter. This does not necessarily mean you cannot help with any of the other things, or do the other things, it just means that you will be the best at the thing you are 'destined' for. The way they decide what you are spiritually connected with is through the tribe's shaman. You will start training for that thing from the day you are born.
  • The Mushroom: You plant things and tend to them as they grow. The Fruit: You harvest the things that are planted, among other things. The Stone: You will fight and hunt. The Leaf: You will be a peacekeeper amongst the tribe. The Gel: You will become a shaman. The Dirt: You will build the buildings. The Shell: You become a guard for the kingdom.

Tenets of Faith

Named the Peyhokee, their system of virtues are thus:
  • Courage - You can have no excess of courage Loyalty (Family above State) - They are allowed to leave if the tribe is cruel to them and their family, I.E does not follow the Peyhokee. Righteousness - They have a strong concept of community service as fair compensation for a crime, but the greater the crime, the greater the compensation. Rulers must have a strong sense of righteousness Respectfulness - If one is honourable and good at fighting. Selflessness - It’s honourable to sacrifice oneself for your family and your tribe. Patience - The least important of their virtues, is seen as important, but if one does not have it, then they do not really care.

Worship

They build shrines in which they would grow mushrooms around. The shrines resemble a totem with their family member's spirit drawn.   Around September, they have a ceremony surrounding the growth of the mushrooms.   Stone Rituals: The stones are those who become the fighters/hunters of Bip society. After every hunt (Maybe yearly) they gather around a fire and honour the spirits they’ve hunted.

Priesthood

Shamans wear mushroom hats as a religious symbol. The older you are, the bigger the hat gets, because it’s a growing colony of mushrooms.
