The Vestrian Republic
In a time of strife, the people of southeastern Vestria did not sit idly by, but rose up against their opressors in a time of opportunity. Although this triumph may have been short lived, it showed the serfs of Vestria that such a thing was possible.
-Boris Karamzin, A People's History of VestriaStructure
Initially, when the Republic was formed in 437, it functioned more as a military dictatorship with Chancellor Coin at it's head. Individual towns and provinces were placed under the control of military commanders, who operated military courts.
When Solenia's intervention force withdrew in 438, the Republic transitioned from military rule to a democratic system. This included towns being ran by elected mayors, and eventually the formation of a parliament made up of elected representatives. In 440, this parliament held elections for a Chancellor and their cabinet. This structure carried on until the Republic's dissolution, with two elections held in total.
Culture
Generally, the Vestrian Republic rejected Vestria's culture of genetic predisposition, and held beliefs of equality and opportunity regardless of ones intrinsic characteristics. Among the gentry, this was manifested in individualism and self improvement, while among the lower classes it took on characteristics of communal living, and elevating others.
