Folk

A Definition Folk is the generic term for an intelligent race. To be considered Folk, a race must be able to do the following things
  • communicate through language.
  • live in peaceable communities.
  • build large-scale, lasting architecture.
  • -not of the Hidden.

    The Races of Folk

    Mi-Suku

Snow Shrews (player character race) are a subterranean people living in the artic that value harmony.
Cloud Dancers (player character race) are Gliders of the central cloud forests who are extremely playful.
Sobekkians are Lizard men with large slightly bulbous toes and fingers. They are skilled traders. While they mostly live on barges or in caravans, they have a few permanent trading posts.
Peacock Spider Clans are colorful spider people who generally walk on four legs. Their silk fiber is highly valued.
Otter-kies when in the rivers, look like an otter. However, they can take off their skins and assume the form of a pointy-eared human.
Corvus switch between a crow/raven and a birdman form. They have both wings and arms in their larger form as well as a more human face. While they can fly, it is almost impossible for them to take off from the ground as a birdman. Most of their settlements are in the mountains.
Fish Lords and Ladies when unclothed and unmoving in the water are almost invisible. Most live in the waters surrounding the land of Mi-Suku but some live in the largest of the terra's lakes. Unable to breathe air properly, they don't come on to land. Their underwater cities are extremely beautiful.

    Visiwa

Alma (player character race) are a furry brachiating people with one large and one small eye. They are known for engineering and building airships.
Pixies (player character race) are an extremely diminutive flying race known for their short attention span.
Or-Chail (player character race) are known for their close connection to metal. Their souls are so bright it can actually heal the damage done by the Hidden and its creatures.
Branded Witches are a wholely female race. They tattoo themselves with magical chemicals giving them arcane powers. Once the totalitarian rulers of Visiwa, they still have extensive commercial holdings, especially in the airship building yards.
Corvus are the same Folk as live in Mi-Suku. They build their homes in the sheer sides of platforms/cubes.
Gnomes are diminutive folk with bulbous noses, round faces, and pointy ears. Known both for their mining and inventing skills they are invaluable to the airship trade. Unfortunately, many gnomes can be very obsessive.
Dark Metal Men were once beautiful hummingbird-like Folk but the god Mali-Mali cursed them and took away their wings. Now they must graft ugly black metal parts onto themselves to survive.
Trogladites are pastel blue, green, or pink Folk that live deep in the platforms/cubes without light. They lack eyes but have large ears and flat noses. To navigate their world, they have a finely tuned sonar ability similar to bats.
Dryads are captivating green and brown men and women bound to one of the many banyan trees. They live only as long as their tree. While known for doing nothing without reward, they are strangely resistant to the powers of the Hidden and its minions.

    Lapansi

Sidhe (player character race) were the first Folk to be created. These underground-dwelling, pointy-eared people are known for their elegant nobles.
Kuwattu (player character race) are large, strong men and women with red, black, blue or yellow skin and horns who are skilled weapon makers and enemies of the Trolls.
Corvus are the same folk as in Mi-Suku. They usually live high in the mountains in Lapansi.
Falcon Wives are another bird Folk. However, they don't change shape and have the heads of falcons. While somewhat diminutive, they are known to be quite savage, especially against trespassers.
Cu-Kith They are shape changers that can be rather small pointy-eared Folk or huge intimidating black dogs. They are known for how well a tribe works together on a single goal.
Jade Rabbits are rabbit people that live mostly on the plains of Lapansi. The majority of Jade Rabbits are farmers but they are known for their work with jade.
Karzelek are short stout folk who live in or near the Sidhe's caverns. Excelling at mining, they are well known for their ability to find gems and precious minerals.
Moss Wrights are shy folk who live in mountain forests. They can change their size with ease being as tall as a troll one minute and as small as a mouse the next. Because of their abilities in herbalism and forestry, they make the best medicines.

    The Grand Arboretum

Keldin (player character race) are the forests healers. They are psychically bonded to a huge wolf like species called Asurai.
Lutra (character race) tree-dwelling warriors protecting the plants and animals of the forest from poachers.
Bear-Kin are intelligent bears. Except for clothes and other trappings of civilized folk, the people look exactly like regular bears. They live in villages and small towns in the more temperate areas.
Greater Mantis are giant bugs. While their forelimbs look very much like their smaller namesakes, their rear legs are more cricket-shaped with longer feet allowing their mid limbs to be used as arms or legs as needed. Many enjoy excitement and become adventurers, sky sailors, or even bounty hunters.
Corvus are more of the same Folk that has been described in Mi-Suku. They mostly live in the more temperate areas up in the canopy but there are a few communities in the tropics.
Fauns look like Sidhe children with the legs of a goat and immature horns. They live often near or even amid Bear-kin communities. Folk of other terra are often surprised at how well the two races get along.
Dokkalfr are sometimes called Black Sidhe. They look exactly like Sidhe except they are completely black with pale yellow to dark orange eyes. They are nocturnal and live in dense forest. Their skin is so sensitive to light that even a very bright lantern will burn it.
Moss Wrights are just like those in Lapansi and populate quiet parts of the forest. They are allies of the Keldin.

    Uram

Lahoti (player character race) These folk look similar to humans but with carmine red skin and black hair. They have the ability to find anything.
Fox Spirits (player character race) are desert shape changers able to morph between a fox with a voluminous tail and a small Human-like person with slightly pointed ears.
Magma Men (and women) have lava for their insides and cracked rock and ash for their skin. They live in and near active calderas.
Mirabrawk have translucent sky-blue skin. Lightning (actually any electricity) is theirs to command even conjuring it from nothing.
Ashwalkers are grey lizard men with short stout legs, long torsos, and a triangular heads. They don't shed their skin like other reptiles. Instead, it builds up like a callus protecting them a kin to armor. The outermost layer flakes off in miniscule pieces looking to many observers like ash.
White Ones are called Living Ghosts because they have very pale almost snow-white skin and pale blond hair. Their eyes however are a startling purple. As with most Folk in Uram, they are extremely resilient.
Karzelek are an offshoot of the Lapansi folk who moved to the mountains of Uram to mine gems.

    Archipelligo

Humans (player character race) are the sole intelligent creatures (unless you consider automatons) that came to Naiyam when their terra did.
Pixies (player character race) are the same Folk as on Visiwa but these have taken on Humanish culture.
Dark Metal Men are also the same as found on Visiwa. They have found significant amounts of the metals they use to make dark metal alloy in the Humanish terra chunks.
Ash Walkers are some of the Folk from Uram who have migrated to the Archipelago to enjoy the warmth the Sun provides in a less hostile climate.
Fallen Paragons were created when the Humanish terra impacted Havaesa. The Paragons' dove-like wings became impregnated with mineral-laden particulates making them strong, metalic looking, and too heavy for them to fly. Nobody knows why but the condition was inherited by their descendants. Some have been enticed to join the Hidden with the promise of regaining the skys.

    The Sky Sea

Nagas live beyond the protection of the Terra. They resemble snakes except they have arms and heads like most Folk. To communicate mind to mind, they wear strange metal devices that resemble a cobras hood.

    Awakened Cats

Awakened cats are a special group of folk. They are found on all the terra even in the Archipelago. They look like very large specimens of various wild cat species. On their front paws where the dew claw normally is, they have opposible thumbs. While unable to speak, they can communicate with most species through a form of telepathy. The following is the wild cat species they resemble and a quick description.
-In Mi-Suku: Serval (golden yellow with dotted stripes and a short black-tipped tail) and Ocelot (solid black markings on multicolored tawny, white, yellowish, or grey.)
-In Visiwa: Cheeta (Tawney to buff with evenly spaced black spots)
-In Lapanzi: Pallas Cats (dense light grey fur with grumpy expressions and low round ears) and Lynx (grey or brown fur with black tuffs on their triangular ears)
-In the Grand Arboretum: Jaguarundi (red-brown or grizzled grey fur with no markings and flat heads) and Occelots
-In Uram: Sand Cats (diminutive, pale sand-colored fur with black markings on limbs and tail)
-In the Archipelago: Cougars (Large cats with tawny to white fur and no markings except some black on face ears and tail)
