Languages
Hyrulean (Common)
The most common language that is spoken in Old Hyrule, the Harkinian Empire, and Termina. This language is commonly understood in Labrynna and Calatia, but is not universally spoken by all.
All player characters know Hyrulean, which does not count against your known languages. Blini
A guttural language spoken typically by monsters like Moblins or Lizalfos. Linguists will note that it is a very limited language that is unable to communicate complex ideas and was likely a bridge language that formed to aid in communication between these peoples. No written version of the language exists. Calatian
The common language of Calatia. The language shares much in common with the Gerudo language in syntax and some common words. Castori
The regional language of the Castor Wilds and a common tongue understood by the various clans. The language has gained some prominence among the coasts of the Great Sea due to Castori raiders. The language has been heavily influenced by Draconic, Gelden and Blini. Darkspeech
A dark tongue spoken by those who are allied to the Demon King. The language seems to be a fusion of Blini and ancient Hylian. A variation of it is also spoken by the Twili, though they will often shy away from using it around lightworlders for fear of the evil association. Draconic
This language of dragons is an ancient tongue that was passed down in a cruder form to the Lizalfos. It remains somewhat common in Lizalfos strongholds on the eastern continent. The Rito of Dragon Roost Isle also learn this language in order to speak with their protector deity. Fey
This is the language of fairies and other fey like creatures. It is often taught to forest dwellers and speaking it is almost akin to singing. There is a magic to this language and it is often learned by those who wield primal magic. Fokkeru
An avian language common to the Rito. This language is communicated mostly in high pitched screeches, which allows Rito to communicate simple ideas over vast distances while airborne. In close proximity, Rito will speak in Fokkeru in short clipped noises that are similar to chirping or clucking birds. Many Rito are mildly embarrassed by this similarity and don’t speak this way when they are around non-Rito. Gelden
The common language of the Gerudo, primarily spoken only in the presence of their own. Many common Gerudo words are still used even when speaking in Gerudo as a matter of cultural pride. Gerudo typically don’t teach their full language to outsiders and it's forbidden to teach it to men. Goronian
A simple and monosyllabic language that is spoken by Gorons. The language includes over a thousand different ways to describe rocks, dirt, and minerals, but has absolutely no words for gender. The language is tricky to learn, because every word has a different meaning depending on the volume and bass of the word spoken. Because Goron voices range from baritone to an inhumanly deep bass, it’s an incredibly difficult language for non-Gorons to speak. Hylian (Ancient)
An ancient language that was used in the past. It is grammatically similar to Hyrulean, but with many differences in the language that can make it difficult to understand by a modern speaker. This dead language is usually only understood by scholars. Koridite
A language spoken by traders from the west beyond the Ocean Realm. The language has no common origin with any of the languages spoken on the two main continents, but it has its uses for coastal cities in Calatia. Labrynnish
The common language of Labrynna. Like Hyrulean, it has a common origin in the Hylian language. Because of the prevalence of Labrynnish sailors, it is a common language among many sailors and it is often used by the Zora of the surrounding seas. Sheikah
An old language that can trace its origins as an evolution of the Zonai language. Although most Sheikah only speak Hyrulean, this old language still has its place among Sheikah historians and those who wish to preserve their culture. This language is also used (although with a cipher) for all internal Yiga records. Subrosian
An old language that shares many loan words from Goronian, but without the peculiarities of pitch and volume. Although this language is primarily only spoken in the Depths, there are some Goron tribes that have adopted the language from regular interactions with Subrosians. Zolan
A language that can only really be spoken and understood when underwater. The language is slow and has an almost mournful quality to it. Because of the amphibious nature of Zora and Geozards, they typically learn the local languages when dealing with surface dwellers. Zonai (Ancient)
Another ancient language that was used by a now extinct people. This language is sometimes still invoked for ancient religious texts due to the Zonai’s divine connections.
