Session 36
General Summary
This session began with the party stepping through the portal to Mapleton. While there, they payed the local blacksmith to use their forge and created a new Key; the Anti Key. This Key has the power to reverse the effects of other Keys when used on objects that other Keys have been used on. Upon its completion, they tested its power on Gurat, freeing him from the grasp of the Control Key.
The next day, the party was about to leave for Clonio to see Jaylen, when they were alerted to the arrival of another beholder. They went to investigate and found that it was their old friend Zor. He looked a little different from the last time they saw him; he sprouted more eyestalks, some tentacles, and his large eye was split down the center. Clearly he had been through a lot. Part of him wanted to befriend the party while the other part sought vengeance for the suffering he was forced to endure. The party barely managed to convince Zor that they actually are his friends and the group traveled to Zor's old lair via portal to drop him off before going to see Jaylen.
After saying their goodbyes to Zor, the party opted to spend the night in the abandoned hospital they performed Xaverie's surgeries in soas not to draw attention to their return. That night, the party was awoken to a child watching them. For fear of the kid being a spy, the party decided to travel back to Everclear to finish the night. When they arrived, the town hall and courthouse were on fire and a group of looters were breaking in to a nearby store. Xaverie killed a few of them with Eldritch Blast and the others fleed. They then decided to spend the rest of the night in the shop the thugs were trying to rob. While there, Vaision searched for anything of value in the shop, which appeared to have been a jewelry store before the evacuation of the town. There he found a Ring of Mind Shielding.
The next day, the party sent Thresh with the portal staff to meet with Jaylen. Things went smoothly until he opened the portal in Jaylen's office, revealing the party to him. He sounded the alarm, but the party managed to free him from the Control Key in time for him to announce it was a false alarm. They then caught up and explained their need to speak with Mother Krakenshine. Jaylen informed them that the arrest warrant they had gotten previously was now expired, but could be renewed. He also gave Vaision a letter that had been intercepted on its way to Tremont Manor.
Former Count Vaision Tremore of Cithrel,
It is with great sadness that I must inform you of a terrible tragedy. On Majakir 11, 1350PD assassins infiltrated a royal dinner celebrating the continued successes of the Grand Old Empire of Cithrel in the ongoing war. Said assassins, who will have been publicly executed by the time you read this, disguised themselves as kitchen staff and poisoned roughly 6 in every 10 members in attendance. Of those poisoned, only around half survived. Your mother, unfortunately, did not.
She had no living will, thus the law dictates that her property is now yours. In addition to that, you have inherited the title of Duke from your now late great uncle Duke Icarus Friedrick Tremore as well as his vast estate as neither he nor his 12 sons survived this horrific event. You are now 6th in line for the throne. As your head of staff back home, rest assured your new belongings will be well cared for. Your local bank should be informed of your inheritance by the time you read this, so if money was ever a concern for you, it won’t be anymore.
Your ever faithful servant,
Smokes
P.S. If you need someone to talk to, I’m always here.
After reading the letter, the party with Jaylen in tow, traveled via portal to the Supreme Court of Clonio. They had no trouble getting an audience with the Law Master and quickly had the warrant renewed. Just as they were about to leave, however, they were assaulted by a handful of the governor's secret police. They clearly wanted the party dead as they utilized a number of different poisons and even snipers shooting silver bullets at them from a distance. In the end they were no match for the party. This was calculated as, when they went to loot the bodies, they discovered that there were explosives strapped to their chests that all went off simultaneously. In the end, the party survived.
