Mount Versengt

An active volcano is where humans first raised arms against their monstrous oppressors in legend and its throne has been contested for over a millennium since by those seeking to claim its legacy as their own. While peasants toil on and beneath the surface, a cruel princess oversees her dominion from a dark palace built on the ruins of a dozen castles and royal halls in the very heart of the fiery mountain. She searches for the crown of a hero from whom she claims descendance.

Demographics

Government

The Jotnarvegish Principality and its war council maintain martial law over the territory.

Defences

Many walls and strongholds barricade the mouth of the mountain, manned by ten thousand weary crusaders.

Industry & Trade

The legendary forge within the mountain once supplied arms for much of the realm of Freyvhelle, yet under the current Principality the territory has become largely isolationist as they build their own standing army.

History

It is believed that the first settlers of Versengt in the time before history were human tribes turning to agriculture for the first time in its volcanic soils. Petrified remains indicate the fate some of these communities met, suffocated by burning ash. The first kingdom within the mountain was built by giants. They carved out its depths and constructed a great forge with its naturally flowing magma. The giants indentured the humans to produce their food and imported dwarven slaves to dig beneath the mountain for precious metals. During the Age of Enmity came a revolution, according to myth led by the King of Knights Elias Von Ritter who from the throne of his former oppressors established the first kingdom of humanity which grew into the Reisenjot Empire. This throne was short lived as the succession fell to turmoil and the mountain was passed between claimants for generations. The longest dynasty in this warring period was that of dwarven House Eitri who held the throne for 200 years. In 589 AE, Versengt was conquered by the Zelweiren Empire and became the seat of its power. Emperor Friedrich the Great made no claim to descent from King Elias and destroyed much of the mountain's ancient halls to put in place an impenetrable castle, however his grandson was later forced to cede the territory with the dissolution of his empire. For a century after, the castle was abandoned and the mines closed with local mayors fighting any claim to the dead kingdom until the goliath clan of Aurgelmir arrived as refugees of war from the northern seas and were allowed to call the place home. The communities lived in relative harmony until in 986 AE the Jotnarvegish Crusade led by Jarl Aghnar of Verspreide sieged the castle, tore down its walls, and purged the giantkin. He named himself prince of Versengt and built a palace on its ruins, declaring independence from the elective monarchy his homeland. Soon he passed in his sleep and his sister took his throne.

Architecture

Most common in the current age are simple timber framed structures, but Versengt's age and the many hands it has passed through grant its great architectural variety. A great gothic palace houses the throne within ancient stone halls carved by giants and the dwarven quarters have their own microcosm of history.

Geography

The central palace district and mines are built into the heart of the volcanic Mount Versengt while the common populace occupies fertile farmland in the surrounding hills.
