God-Gifts

This article is a WIP. Stuff like additional information and art will be added soon.

What Is It?

God-gifts are presents bestowed by gods upon mortals, intended to deepen relationships and more easily facilitate dialogue. In addition, god-gifts enhance the spiritual connection between individuals and the divine, acting as conduits for wisdom and guidance. These sacred offerings often manifest in various forms, such as talents, insights, or even prophetic visions.   For thousands of years, these gifts enabled mortals and gods to thrive together. The gods offered spiritual support and wisdom, while people shared stories about them and created rituals to honour them. This closeness was shattered by The Deep Sleep, a period when the gifts disappeared, and emptiness took over Mytharae.

History

Origin

Many hold that the first god-gifts were introduced in the prehistoric age of Mytharae, centuries following the creation of humanity. Rituals and sacrifices for deities were expensive during this period, and prayers weren't always fulfilled. To amend this, several gods added fragments of their essence to each mortal's heart, bestowing them with a bit of their powers. These divine bestowals allowed mortals to channel the will of the gods, granting them abilities that could influence fate and fortune. As a result, humans began to forge stronger connections with the divine, shaping a new era of worship and unity.

Effects from The Deep Sleep

The Deep Sleep was a dark time. A time when every mortal in the world had, with seemingly no explanation, fallen into a slumber so deep and long-lasting, it was regarded as a death. Their final memories were of a fatigue that struck like lightning. A hot stab to their very essence. The painful sting of a severed connection. And the overwhelming, suffocating nothing.   When everyone finally awoke, they discovered that they had lost memories of the past and that their world had drastically changed. … But most alarming of all, the mortals could no longer sense their beloved deities. It felt as though they had been abandoned.

The potency of godly gifts was notably snuffed during the infamous Deep Sleep, and to this day, it remains only partially restored. Since then, the world has entered an era of uncertainty, loss of faith and diminished miracles. As a result, countless seekers now wander in search of remnants of the divine, hoping to reignite the connection between mortals and their celestial counterparts.   Many desperate individuals and zealots resort to tactics like practising forbidden magic, dangerous rituals, and even attempting to resurrect deceased deities. One demonstration is the Festival of Awakening, where various cults gather around the Hand of Creation every ten years to chant ancient hymns in hopes of revitalising any dormant magic.

How to Obtain One

A god-gift can be obtained through one of two methods:   At birth, an individual may receive one or several divine gifts from their parents, which begin to reveal themselves as the child nurtures their faith in the deity or deities. This can be as straightforward as simply recognizing their presence. An alternative approach is to pursue a deity and demonstrate one's worthiness to receive their divine gift. One can accomplish this by fulfilling a task assigned by the deity or by completely dedicating oneself to their service. This is usually the method humans pursue.   In both cases, the journey to understanding and wielding these gifts can be fraught with challenges, especially self-doubt and wavering faith. Yet, the rewards often lead to profound personal transformation and a deeper connection to the divine.

Manifestations

An individual's unique expression of their god-gift is profoundly influenced by their understanding of the deity and their domains. Take Malama - God of Light & the Sun, for instance; someone who views Him as compassionate and nurturing may have gifts that bloom as golden sunflowers, whereas another individual who sees Him as playful could experience their gift manifesting as vibrant fire.
My primary deity is Polmas, Goddess of the Night and Moon, and I associate the night with soft silk, crystal clear water, and clear glass. Hence, my god-gift manifests as Silky Embrace, Crystal Waters and See-through Planes.
— Crescent Moon explaining her god-gift
The more profound the belief, the clearer the manifestation becomes to other people. This predominantly happens during debates and arguments, where the participants express their positions clearly. The sheer power of faith can be profound enough to influence our physical reality.

Loss of a Link

Relationships don't last forever, no matter how close they are.

Loss of Faith

A god-gift is an intimate bond between an everyday person and their god(s), and disbelief can shatter this bond. Nonetheless, this relationship can be restored by rejuvenating one's faith in the deity or deities, whether through prayer, reflection, acts of kindness or sacrifice.

Death of the Deity

An alternate method by which this connection can be broken occurs when the deity at the other end perishes. In such a scenario, every mortal who bears their divine gift experiences an agonizing sensation in their hearts, akin to being pierced by a searing blade. This phenomenon is believed to have triggered the disappearance of all god-gifts among mortals during The Deep Sleep.

Poor people. It must have been devastating to lose that link to their gods during/after the Deep Sleep. I hope some connections can be restored.

Quite like how gifts are influenced by the person's understanding of the deity. And I'm intrigued to learn more about the Deep Sleep and the gods who still linger on.
